With the Easter Bank Holiday approaching and the weather improving, gardeners across Britain are eager to enjoy their outdoor spaces after months of dreary weather.

But there's a silent threat that could spoil the festivities: weeds. An expert has shared the best ways to get rid of weeds, without using products.

These garden invaders do more than just create an unsightly mess in your lawn and flowerbeds.

Left unchecked through spring, weed pollen becomes a significant trigger for hay fever, potentially disrupting your garden gatherings.

This concern is particularly pressing this year, with forecasts indicating hay fever will be the worst in recent years.

Whether it's chickweed, nettles or dandelions, now is the time to tackle these unwelcome visitors before they take hold.

A lawn expert at Hayter, Chris Cooper, has shared his professional advice on tackling these spring garden invaders.

When it comes to removing weeds, the gardening pro recommended a hands-on approach without needing chemical weedkillers.

He said: "As the name suggests, you only need your hands and ideally a decent pair of gardening gloves to remove weak weeds from the garden.

"Dig out these perennial weeds with your fingers, being careful to dig the full weed including the bulb. The same goes for annual weeds, catching them before they fully seed.

"If you're hand-pulling lawn weeds, do be careful, though. You don't want to make a mess of the surrounding grass.

"If the root is longer than you'd expect in spring for one reason or another, you can always use a weed fork. These longer tools can help you pull long roots out of grass or soil with precision, mitigating damage to a lawn or soil bed."

Beyond immediate removal, the expert emphasised the importance of prevention strategies.

Chris advised: "Preventing weeds from taking strong roots in the spring will save you more pain in the summer, which is why you must get into good habits now."

He suggested targeting weeds at this time of year to stop them from becoming more of a problem in the warmer months.

By implementing these preventative measures now, gardeners can enjoy a weed-free Easter Bank Holiday and set themselves up for a more manageable summer garden.
