"But the owner says, I do you know wrong. The first workers received exactly what had been agreed. The generosity shown to the others did not take anything away from them. Jesus is challenging our instinct to measure everything by comparison. Sometimes the question is not why did they receive that? But why shouldn't another person's blessings make mine less valuable? The parable points towards the mystery of God's grace.
"God's generosity does not always follow our calculations of merit or status or seniority, or what is deserving. As Isaiah declares, for my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my ways. Your ways, says the Lord. Grace can surprise us because grace is not a mathematical formula.
"Jesus asks, is your I evil because I am good? The question reaches beyond the vineyard. Sometimes our greatest struggle is not what we have received, but what someone else has received. The Christian responses to learn to celebrate goodness even when it comes to someone else."
