"He says that people notorious for their wrongdoing were entering God's kingdom ahead of the outwardly religious people he was speaking to. Why? Not because wrongdoing doesn't matter. The first son was wrong to refuse his father, but he changed his mind. He stopped resisting and went. Jesus point isn't that if we do what we're told, perhaps God will receive us. He's saying that our greatest danger is hypocrisy.
"That paper thin religion that pays lip service to God but doesn't really love or live for him. Instead, those he honours are those who recognise they've done wrong and have the humility to change their minds.
"You see, Jesus teaches that the greatest barrier to our relationship with him isn't our sins. It's our pride that keeps us from admitting we've done wrong and turning back to him. But for those who do, there is full forgiveness and restoration. Because Jesus is the truly obedient son who did His Father's will perfectly and then went to the cross for disobedient people like us."
