A 4-year-old Georgia girl died after she was discovered upside down in a trash can filled with water and fish, according to authorities who continue to probe the child’s tragic death.
Jayde Wooten was discovered in a small bathroom at a residence in the 1200 block of Rocky Creek Road in Macon last Saturday, according to an incident report reviewed by local station WGXA.
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were sent to the home shortly before 2 p.m. for a medical emergency, while an incident report reviewed by WGXA said they arrived to find Jayde receiving CPR.
Emergency personnel transported Jayde to a nearby medical facility, where medical staff later pronounced her dead, according to authorities.
A spokesperson for the Macon-Bibb County Coroner’s Office told People on Thursday that Jayde’s autopsy results remained pending.
As of Saturday, authorities had not released an official cause or manner of death.
Jayde’s father told a responding deputy that he had just arrived home and realized the girl was not in her room, according to WGXA’s account of the incident report.
He then roused Jayde’s mother, who told him she had last seen the 4-year-old eating in the kitchen before falling asleep, according to WGXA.
The father searched the house before going outside to ask neighbors whether they had seen Jayde, according to the incident report.
After hearing Jayde’s mother scream, he returned inside and discovered the 4-year-old upside down in the water-filled garbage can in the bathroom, WGXA reported.
He pulled Jayde from the container and carried her outside to seek help.
The responding deputy noted a large bathroom container holding water and fish, as well as substantial water on the floor leading toward the front door, according to WGXA.
A neighbor told the deputy that Jayde’s mother came to her home seeking help, according to WGXA.
The neighbor and a second resident alternated CPR until Macon-Bibb firefighters arrived, WGXA reported.
One neighbor told the deputy that Jayde expelled fluid from her mouth and briefly opened her eyes during CPR, leading the neighbor to turn her onto her side in an effort to clear her airway, according to WGXA.
The second neighbor told the deputy she could not detect a pulse while performing CPR, according to the incident report.
Firefighters and paramedics took over the emergency response before EMS transported Jayde to a local hospital, according to authorities.
A GoFundMe organized by Devin Wooten identified Maleek Wooten and Jorden Wooten as Jayde’s parents and described her death as a “horrible accident.”
The fundraiser said donations would help cover funeral costs and support the parents in the coming months.
“No parent should ever have to face this kind of pain,” the organizer wrote.
The campaign had raised $3,755 toward a $5,500 goal as of Saturday.
