A 52-year-old woman has died in hospital from injuries sustained in last month's Christmas market attack in Magdeburg, Germany, bringing the death toll to six, prosecutors have announced.

The victim succumbed to injuries received when a car was deliberately driven through crowds of shoppers at the festive market on December 20.

The attack, which shocked Germany, also left more than 200 people injured when a vehicle ploughed through the busy marketplace.

Among the other victims were four women aged 45, 52, 67 and 75, as well as a 9-year-old boy, according to prosecutors in Naumburg.

Officials have identified the suspect as a 50-year-old psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia who arrived in Germany in 2006 and had obtained permanent residency.

The man, who was arrested at the scene, does not match typical profiles of extremist attackers, according to authorities.

He described himself as an ex-Muslim and had expressed strong criticism of Islam.

The suspect had also shown sympathies for Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party and had posted support for far-right views on social media.
