Deborah Ann Woll has been sitting on the same God of War secret since the year the reboot first launched, and she finally let it slip.

Sony unveiled Laufey during its June 2 State of Play, handing fans 20 minutes of gameplay and a brand new lead in Faye, Kratos’ late wife, instead of the Spartan they expected. Most fans figured the project came together recently, somewhere after Ragnarök, Woll’s her math says otherwise.

When Cory Barlog first pitched the Faye game

Speaking to CGMagazine, Woll said director Cory Barlog pitched her the Faye-led game in 2018, the same year the rebooted God of War launched.

“He pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then,” she said. When Barlog first brought her in years later to discuss Ragnarök and walked her through the 2018 reboot, she recalled, he already had a poster for the Laufey project featuring her and a cube. That cube, now the cosmic companion Phranque, has lurked in the lore since the very beginning.

Woll carried the secret for close to a decade, across her years as Karen Page and beyond, without breathing a word. She called Laufey her favourite job, the rare set where her usual self-doubt never surfaced, and said the trailer made her “jaw hit the ground”.

Laufey director Ariel Lawrence has placed the conversation a little later, during Ragnarök’s development, yet both land on the same point, which is that Sony Santa Monica dreamed up Faye’s afterlife long before the public caught wind.

At the time of writing, no release date exists yet, though Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has said the game isn’t years away.

The project made its loud debut this month, with the spinoff reveal sending fans into a frenzy before Barlog stepped in to promise that Kratos isn’t finished either.
