On Monday, the “Stand With Karmelo Coalition” announced Karmelo Anthony has a new team of six lawyers who will be handling the appeal of his murder conviction free of charge.
Anthony, 19, was found guilty by a Collin County jury on June 9 in the April 2025 stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf following an altercation at a Frisco track meet. Anthony maintained he acted in self-defense, but he was convicted of first-degree murder and jurors sentenced him to 35 years in prison.
The New Team
Remember when he claimed he was indigent, penniless, and he needed court-appointed lawyers? Well, he got free help that is not court-appointed; it is like a dream team of lawyers who want to help people who are aggrieved racially from the sound of it.
They include people like Gary Bledsoe, who happens to be the president of the Texas NAACP; someone named Brooke Cluse, who is not only a lawyer but chief of staff to Benjamin Crump (you might remember him from the George Floyd case); and Sean Daredia, whose claim to fame is getting a hung jury for an alleged Tren de Aragua member charged with murder.
In a press release, the organization said the “appellate team has been retained following the conviction to conduct a fresh, independent review of the trial record.” The attorneys, meanwhile, said in a statement that their “responsibility is to determine whether a legal error occurred and to ensure that every issue supported by the record is fully and vigorously presented on appeal.”
His Chances on Appeal
That is his new legal team that thinks they are going to be able to turn around this just conviction. They are going to do what all criminal defense attorneys do – try to find some scurrilous ground on which to appeal. They will argue he didn’t get a fair trial in one way, shape, or form, and he is entitled to that appeal.
It is not going to go anywhere. We have already had a full trial, and the verdict that the jury came to was entirely supported. Good luck.
