Zack Polanski's Green Party has voted to formally establish itself as an anti-Zionist party, after members backed a motion at the party’s 2026 conference in Brighton this afternoon.
The 'Zionism is racism' motion was passed by 1,022 votes to 813, and was adopted without substantive amendment.
It defines Zionism as an “ethnonationalist political project”, and states that opposition to Zionism should not be equated with antisemitism.
The policy reaffirms the Green Party’s support for Palestinian liberation, the right of return for Palestinians, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and a full arms embargo on Israel.
It also reiterates the party’s support for the right to self-determination, and calls for the creation of a single democratic state across historic Palestine.
Three amendments to the motion were rejected by conference.
Amendment one was defeated by 920 votes to 821, while amendment two was rejected by 948 votes to 798. Amendment three was defeated by 1,086 votes to 684.
A fourth amendment, described by the party as primarily administrative, was passed by a show of hands.
It moved existing party policy statements into line with the newly adopted motion.
A Green Party spokesman said the debate had been “serious and deeply felt”, and that members had exercised their right to determine party policy.
They said the party remained committed to opposing racism and to equality, justice and human rights.
“The Green Party is an anti-racist party and has consistently opposed the illegal occupation of both Palestinian and Syrian land, called for an end to arms sales to the Israeli government and spoken out fearlessly about the devastating situation in Gaza and the West Bank,” the spokesman said.
“Those positions remain central to our approach. So too does our deeply held commitment to equality, justice and human rights for all and opposition to racism in all its forms."
The decision formally places opposition to Zionism within the party’s policy framework, alongside its existing positions on Israel, Palestine and the wider conflict.
