'Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter'
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded to former President Jimmy Carter's death by sending condolences to the former first lady, although she has been dead for over a year.
Carter, the 39th president of the United States, died Sunday at 100, the Carter Center announced. He passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, where his wife Rosalynn Carter died Nov. 19, 2023.
That didn't stop Abbott from extending his sympathies to the late First Lady, according to a statement posted to EIN Presswire early Monday morning.
"Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family," he wrote.
His statement has since been updated to read:
"Cecilia and I mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter alongside millions of Americans across the country. Our nation remains the greatest beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world because of our fearless chief executives who are our guiding force through the best and worst of times. For that, we owe President Carter our enduring gratitude for his service as the 39th President of the United States. Having led a life marked by selfless service to the American people, President Carter leaves behind a great legacy as a husband, father, naval officer, governor, and Nobel prize winner, and he will be greatly missed by many. Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to the entire Carter family."
Abbott's office did not respond to a request for comment Monday. The governor's social media pages acknowledged his original statement had been changed by adding "UPDATED" to posts of the amended statement.

They all tried to kill Trump. Don’t care about a failed president who lived a long life or his wife other than they’re family and friends are sad.

Mistakes happen, even to the good intentioned.
The Governor’s staff should have done due diligence and found that out for him.

That’s OK. Jimmy Carter probably left Abbott his running shoes in his will. :-P

I'd pop open a can of Billy Beer if I had one.
I didn't think I'd live long enough to get a president worse than Carter, but then came Biden.
