An unknown hero emerged on the lawless streets of Los Angeles’ Skid Row to save a four-year-old pit bull that was about to be burned to death.
Surveillance footage captured a person dressed a white hoodie and black pants throwing a flammable object into a van that was being used as a home early Thursday morning.
Chained to the van was Rosie the pit bull, her owner Clara Catron told Fox 11.
As the footage showed the van being consumed by flames, an unidentified person in black shorts and a backwards cap quickly ran toward the raging fire. The stranger is seen using bolt cutters to free Rosie.
“Rosie is my baby… she’s my life,” Catron told Fox 11. “If she would have died, I wouldn’t have wanted to make it.”
She added that the fire occurred while she was living inside the van with the dog.
Business owners in area told the outlet they’re not surprised by the incident as it’s become common in Skid Row, an area notorious for its homelessness issues.
“It’s not enough to give a dog a leash,” said Estela Lopez, executive director of the Downtown Industrial Business Improvement District.
“You need to protect these dogs and the people who are down here from the violence and the lawlessness that is an everyday occurrence on Skid Row.”
Mayor Karen Bass’ office told Fox 11 that the incident will be investigated, reiterating calls to do more to address animal cruelty on Skid Row.
“If you abuse or neglect an animal, you will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” her office said.
Bass announced a police task force in November 2025 that promised specialized investigators, coordinated enforcement, accountability and “prompt relief,” including referrals for prosecution, for animal abuse.
Animal rights group PETA this week claimed Bass is still not doing enough to crack down on animal abuse, and the group alleged that enforcement has been too little.
Catron is now seeking a new new van, with a GoFundMe campaign launch to help her.
“Clara now does not have a place to stay, and she also cannot work the way she was before,” a description on the fundraising page read. “Clara works as an Uber Eats driver, and without a van, she cannot make a living.”
