A mother has been arrested in Hong Kong for alleged child neglect after her four-year-old son was suspected to have been injected with herbal medicine, leaving him fighting for his life in hospital.

The woman, 36, and her husband alerted authorities at around 12pm on Sunday when the mother found her son passed out in their flat in Lucky Building on San Ma Tau Street, Hung Hom.

An ambulance took the unconscious boy to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei, where he is in a critical condition.

A police source said the mother used a syringe to inject the boy with the contents of two herbal pills brought in from mainland China, without a medical prescription, at around 11am.

The boy has a history of asthma.
