Hong Kong police have rounded up 24 people, including four mainland Chinese visitors, during raids on two residential flats used as underground casinos and offering baccarat games.
The force said on Tuesday that officers seized HK$1.9 million (US$244,154) in gambling chips, HK$20,000 in cash and four baccarat tables, among other paraphernalia, in the two flats on Shanghai Street and Tong Mi Road in Mong Kok the previous day.
Officers from the Mong Kok district’s special duties squad identified the gambling establishments through intelligence analysis and further investigations, according to police.
Police said 12 men and 12 women were apprehended in the two flats.
A 48-year-old local man was detained on suspicion of running an illegal gambling den while three other suspects, including a 63-year-old mainland traveller, were arrested for allegedly assisting in the operation of an illicit establishment.
