A Hong Kong taxi driver has been injured while his passenger has escaped unscathed after a cab plunged into a flooded sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe along a road in Cheung Sha Wan.

The accident happened soon after midnight at 880 Lai Chi Kok Road, with a section of the route still closed and a number of bus services affected as of Sunday morning.

Police learned of the incident at around 12.30am. The taxi was heading along the road when it became partially submerged in the flooded sinkhole caused by the ruptured pipe.

The driver, 59, and his passenger, 47, managed to escape the vehicle as it sunk into the waters, police said.

The force said the driver, a man surnamed Siu, reported feeling unwell and was sent to the nearby Caritas Medical Centre, while the male passenger surnamed Chan had been unharmed.
