Strange Coins have played a significant, if intermittent role, in the Destiny economy over the last decade. They have once again emerged as an operative currency when dealing with Xur, so here’s everything you need to know about earning and spending Strange Coins.

Xur underwent a major rework in The Final Shape with Legendary Shards becoming defunct. Xur has become a full reputation vendor with associated rewards, with players able to progress through his levels by buying things when he’s around over the weekend.

The mysterious Agent of the Nine has a variety of wares for sale, ranging from Exotic weapon Catalysts to upgrade materials and weapons from previous seasons no longer obtainable from their original source.

How to earn Strange Coins in Destiny 2

Strange Coins are primarily obtained from Destiny 2’s three core Ritual Activities, but they can also be obtained from auxiliary content, including Iron Banner, Trials of Osiris, events, and Season Pass rewards. Here’s every source and the quantity you can expect to receive for each respective activity completion.

Ritual Playlist activities

Strange Coins will drop upon completing any Ritual Activity, though the amount you will get for each varies.

Ritual Playlist activities include anything from the three core playlists of the game – Vanguard, Crucible, and Gambit. At the time of writing, 2-4 coins are dropping from each run through and there doesn’t appear to be increased rewards for making it to the end of the game’s more difficult pursuits.

If you’re just looking to farm as efficiently as possible, Devil’s Lair is a good bet, thanks to how fast it is to complete compared to other Strikes.

Trials of Osiris

Those of you who are into the competitive side of PvP in Destiny 2 should find that you are able to earn Strange Coins by participating in Trials of Osiris.

Taking into account the relative speed of any given Trials match, the endgame PvP continues to be one of the best methods of farming Strange Coins in Episode Heresy. Especially when the activity grants double reputation, you’ll be earning the currency not just from matches, but fast rank ups in the active Season Pass.

Equally, Iron Banner also serves as another source of Strange Coins, though players will obviously be limited to the periods when the activity is live.

You’ll receive three Coins for a win and two for a loss from every Iron Banner match. Considering the duration of Iron Banner matches is considerably longer than that of Trials, it’s not recommended to farm here unless you’re also hunting for a specific IB weapon like Tinasha’s Mastery.

Season Pass rewards

Farming Season Pass ranks is an extremely efficient method of farming Strange Coins. Both the free and paid-for tracks on the pass award Strange Coins at intermittent intervals in varying quantities, with higher ranks generally offering the biggest payouts.

Completing Seasonal Challenges represents the fastest means of ranking up the Pass, many of which have their own individual rewards, including weapons and Bright Dust.

Favor of the Nine

Another major thing to be aware of is the Favor of the Nine timed buff. This is granted after players spend 47 Strange Coins with Xur. This grants a chance for a bonus coin to drop every time you’d normally be awarded one from the usual channels, potentially doubling your earning power. This effect lasts eleven days and stacks up to three times, so it’s well worth pursuing each week.
