A hygiene expert has lifted the lid on the one thing you might be doing wrong in the shower - and it can cause you to really stink.

The important information was shared in a new video posted to TikTok by Mary Futher, also known as Madame Sweat, who is the founder of clean body brand Kaia Naturals.

Futher, who has amassed over 882,000 followers on her TikTok account, often takes to the platform to share her sweat and hygiene hacks with viewers, and this time was no different.

The beauty expert shockingly revealed that the big mistake was using the same cleanser on your body as you do for your 'smelly bits,' like the groin area.

In fact, it's something that she claims 75 per cent of people are doing wrong.

Hygiene expert Mary Futher has lifted the lid on the one thing you might be doing wrong in the shower - and it can cause you to really stink

'There's two sweat glands that reside in both the groin, underarms, and in your feet, and they need antibacterial treatment - a natural one,' she explained.

'You can't use a highly [fragranced] shower gel, you'll just not stay fresh as long,' Futher continued.

So, what the social media star does herself is keep a separate bar of soap to use on her groin, underarms, and feet.

Futher uses the signature $25 ingrown bar from her own line, but advised which ingredients you should look out for as well - even if yours isn't from Kaia Naturals.

The hygiene expert stressed that that you need to find a bar that has antibacterial ingredients.

'This has salt, I love salt as a natural ingredient, apple cider vinegar, and I like charcoal because it draws out impurities,' she said about the antibacterial ingredients in her own bar.

'I can't use it all over my body because it will dry it out,' Futher added, highlighting why she will only use it on those 'crevices' that she mentioned before.

Other popular brands that make antibacterial soaps include Dove, Dial and Cetaphil.

And she's right - for example, a heavily scented Warm Vanilla Sugar Body Wash sold at Bath and Body Works does not contain ingredients like charcoal or apple cider vinegar.

In the comments section of Madame Sweat's video, some users admitted that they were not aware of this hygiene tip.

'Omg how did I not know this!!!' one person wrote.

Another agreed, 'This is the best explanation of how to stay clean/fresh. Thank you for this soft kind approach.'

'I have three or more and I thought I had OCD for this,' someone else admitted.

One user even suggested using charcoal face wipes that you can find at places like TJ Maxx if you find certain bar soaps too expensive.

So, the next time you hop in the shower, you may want to think twice about how you're washing your body - and make sure you have two types of soap to use.
