Hyundai Warns Owners to Park Outside in Recall of Nearly 95,000 Sedans

Hyundai is recalling 94,622 sedans nationwide and warning owners to park outdoors, away from buildings and other vehicles, because their power-seat motors could overheat and cause a fire.

The recall covers certain 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis and 2017–2020 Genesis G80 sedans, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a notice posted on Oct. 14.

The fire risk exists whether the vehicles are being driven or parked, the agency said.

Hyundai told the NHTSA that it was aware of two alleged fires in the United States associated with the defect as of Oct. 1.

No related crashes or injuries have been reported.

Hyundai estimates that about 1 percent of the recalled vehicles may contain the defect.

A permanent repair is still being developed. Until one is available and the issue is fixed, owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and other cars.

Once a solution is available, affected owners will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer or Genesis retailer.

Repairs will be free, including for vehicles no longer covered by their original warranties.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Dec. 7.

Seat Switch Can Leave Motor Running

The problem involves switches used to move certain front power seats forward and backward and adjust their height.

According to Hyundai, an external impact can damage or dislodge the switch assembly, shifting components inside the switch and potentially leaving it stuck in the activated position.

That can cause the seat-adjustment motor to continue running after the occupant stops using the controls, or even after leaving the vehicle.

Prolonged operation can cause the motor to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.

Possible warning signs include a burning smell coming from the seat, or seat-control switches that stop working properly.

The recalled vehicles include 54,644 Hyundai Genesis sedans manufactured between Feb. 21, 2014, and Feb. 24, 2016, and 39,978 Genesis G80 sedans built between March 17, 2016, and Nov. 7, 2019.

The affected vehicles were assembled in South Korea for the U.S. market.

Other Hyundai Recalls This Year

The latest action follows several other Hyundai recalls in 2026.

In April, Genesis recalled about 95,000 G70, G80, G90, and GV-series vehicles because fuel could leak where a fuel pipe connects to the fuel rail, creating a fire risk.

Dealers were instructed to inspect the connection and tighten or replace the fuel pipe as necessary.

Hyundai also recalled more than 46,000 2026 Palisade SUVs in February over problems with power-folding second- and third-row seats.

The automaker said it accelerated the recall after receiving a report of a fatal incident involving a child, as well as several reports of minor injuries.

Hyundai issued interim software updates while working on a permanent solution.

A more recent recall in June involved Hyundai Tucsons with a software error that could cause the instrument-panel display to fail.

Federal regulators said panels may fail to show critical safety information such as the speedometer or warning lights.

About 96,310 models are affected, including the Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid, all model years 2025 and 2026.
