Something weird has been happening over the past few days. The social media platform X is obviously no stranger to spawning weird gaming trends that are partly or even wholly fueled by generative AI, like the proliferation of games about finding a needle in a haystack, but I’ve never been quite as exhausted by the algorithm-fueled slop as I am by a new plague of vibe-coded gaming mashups. Seemingly overnight, my entire homepage has somehow been taken over by modders who have used AI to develop unexpected crossovers that put famous games like Super Mario 64 inside of other famous games like Elden Ring.
Suddenly, my feed is filled with empty promises that have magically earned thousands of likes and millions of views.
Hey, you can fight Elden Ring bosses with a Minecraft sword!

All of the above mods are AI-generated (or seem to be, in the case of the Tarkov mod, which was turned around in just a few hours after its creator noticed the trend).
guYS With the power of Crack GPS Asstra 6.9, Claus Opoops Slopnet 5.5, I was able to Mod EVERY GAME INTO ONE, I did it all myself with hard work by my typing and coding thanks to AI assistant!!! THE FUTURE IS HERE AND NOW pic.twitter.com/z7874uYdlk

There’s also this “every old Nintendo game” monstrosity, which was made by using AI to try to decompile a bunch of Nintendo DS–era games and then mash them back together into a Frankenstein’s monster fever dream of cozy slop in which you own a dog from Nintendogs and play minigames directly ripped from Cooking Mama while working a shift at Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s The Roost (it also allegedly involves other games including Reel Fishing 3, Story of Seasons, and Kingdom Hearts…somehow).
AI hackers have decompiled almost EVERY old Nintendo game and are now making NEW titles with it.
This game is a mix of Nintendogs Labs and friends, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Yoshinoya, Endless Ocean, Cooking Mama, Go Vacation, Kingdom Hearts, Reel Fishing 3, Story of Seasons and… pic.twitter.com/sCSvLe5ubN

Most of these mods don’t seem to be downloadable yet (and solely exist as Twitter clips, likely uploaded in a rush right after Claude finished churning out its work), and we haven’t been able to verify that all of these are actually playable mods. I was, however, able to test out a Claude-coded mod that adds Minecraft’s items to Skyrim by modder chasmlol, whose Discord server has become somewhat of a hub for this sudden AI modding craze. I did not have a lot of fun with it!
I was a little tickled to find out I could actually break some parts of Skyrim‘s environment to obtain blocks, but after mining about two blocks from a mountain, I instantly fell through and got stuck amid some missing blocks with some awfully funky geometry. Some of these blocks were improperly assigned, too—breaking a metal gate gave me wood—and others failed to render at all. And then, before I even had a chance to dive into battle, I got stuck behind an invisible wall that definitely does not exist in regular Skyrim!
© chasmlolI get that this is an early version of the mod, and I know it’s going to be buggy. But even if it were polished and entirely bug-free, its design does so little to actually integrate the two games into each other that it would still just feel like a sandbox meant to generate viral Twitter clips rather than anything that could result in an actual playthrough of Skyrim using Minecraft’s items. My inventory (shown through Minecraft‘s usual HUD, which shamelessly covered up Skyrim‘s subtitles) came packed with diamond tools, a full set of iron armor, and even a few golden apples, all resources that are fairly difficult to get in Minecraft but were given to me literally right off the bat. The mod comes with a crafting table, sure, but I have no idea how one might actually obtain the resources needed to craft most items—you can’t actually go mining because the stone layer under the world is only a few blocks deep and seemingly ore-free, and I failed to come across any natural food sources, either.
The rest of these mods seem similarly slipshod. I can’t figure out how on earth Tarkov gear in that other Skyrim mod is obtained or how to actually score points while doing kickflips inside of MW2 and maybe also inside of Minecraft (or what said points might get you if they actually existed). None of these mechanics actually synergize with each other in a way that means anything!
Minecraft, Elden Ring, Nintendogs, and all of the other games that have been melded into each other over and over throughout the past few days are special because of the design decisions that were made during their development. Their systems are tightly intertwined and were designed to feed into each other, which is why ripping out parts of these games, unceremoniously smashing them together, and failing to do any real design work to integrate their mechanics or add any semblance of originality results in some incredibly incohesive and unplayable mods.
It’s novel to see one of these clips come across your feed for a few seconds, I guess, but none of these mods have created anything that even resembles the actual gameplay they promise. Sure, you can post your cool skateboard trick appended to an MW2 trickshot to score an easy thousand likes. But does anyone actually want to play these things?
