A psychiatrist has revealed the five signs that you may have separation anxiety.

Dr Jaleel Mohammed, from London, often makes clips on Instagram to inform people of the different symptoms of conditions, such as social anxiety, borderline personality disorder, depression and even narcissism.

He said that while it is more common in children, adults can also experience the type of anxiety disorder.

The first sign is feeling distressed when you are separated from a particular person.

'This isn't just a mild concern - people with separation anxiety experience extreme fear when even thinking about being separated from their loved one,' the health worker said.

Dr Mohammed said the condition can even interfere with their ability to work on daily tasks.

Adults may experience physical symptoms like headaches or nausea, and emotional distress such as panic attacks or nightmares about separation.

The second indication that you may have separation anxiety is that you are reluctant to go anywhere without them which may mean you avoid trips, work, or social events unless you're accompanied by the other person

He added: 'Being separated from them can provoke extreme anxiety, making independent activities seem impossible.'

Dr Mohammed said that people may also have thoughts of their loved ones coming to harm.

'You may constantly imagine the worst case scenario like accidents or illness happening to the one that you love.

'These obsessive thoughts can lead to you constantly checking on your loved one, or can even lead to panic attacks,' Dr Mohammed said.

The medical professional said those with this type of anxiety can experience nightmares about separation.

'These nightmares can often disturb sleep leading to fatigue and increasing emotional instability during the day.

The fifth sign is that the symptoms are enough to impair the person's day-to-day functioning.

'This means the symptoms are severe enough that they disrupt your personal life, social life, work or other important areas,' he added.

He said that separation anxiety can be treated through therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
