An illegal immigrant fleeing from federal immigration authorities crashed into the wife of a New Jersey mayor, sending her to the hospital Sept. 2, according to authorities.
The illegal immigrant suspect fled at high speed, ran a red light, and then crashed into a separate vehicle after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop in North Brunswick on Sept. 2. Authorities identified the driver of the second car as Dr. Penelope Cohen, the wife of Democrat East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. She was hospitalized after suffering a non-life-threatening leg injury, according to authorities.
The suspect then fled the crash scene on foot but was later apprehended by ICE agents.
“ICE law enforcement officers conducted a vehicle stop Sept. 2, during a targeted ICE enforcement operation in North Brunswick, New Jersey. The illegal alien refused to exit the vehicle or comply with lawful commands from ICE officers. After repeated verbal warnings and due to officer safety concerns, ICE officers relied on their training and attempted to safely remove the illegal alien. The illegal alien then proceeded to flee at a high rate of speed and collided with other vehicles,” an ICE spokesperson told CBS News in a statement.
“The illegal alien was arrested for violating U.S. immigration law, will receive due process, and will remain in custody pending removal proceedings,” the spokesperson added.
The North Brunswick Police Department said in the statement that its officers were not involved in ICE’s operation.
“North Brunswick police officers became involved only after the motor vehicle crash occurred, responding to the scene to address the crash and related public safety matters,” the department said.
Democrat New Jersey Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman blamed ICE for the crash, claiming the agency’s actions endangered innocent people.
On Monday, an ICE vehicle drove into a prayer vigil outside Delaney Hall and drove over a woman's foot.
Today, it appears an ICE involved car chase resulted in an accident involving the wife of the Mayor of East Brunswick.
