Inside the vicious catfights and scandals rocking Bill Belichick's UNC: The Jordon Hudson 'explosion' and another racy age gap romance... as coach's daughter-in-law lawyers up

The ties that bind the Belichick family had already begun to fray by last November, when one night – in a hidden corner of Kenan Memorial Stadium – something snapped. Or rather, someone snapped.

The story goes that after UNC had beaten Stanford – one of just four wins in a miserable 2025 season – Belichick headed to his office alongside his girlfriend, 25-year-old Jordon Hudson. There, they were joined by his son, Steve – who serves as UNC's defensive coordinator – and Steve's wife, Jen. It wasn't much of a celebration.

Instead? Jen Belichick is said to have exploded at Hudson, taking aim at her diet, her fashion choices, her 'controlling' personality, and her controversial relationship with the legendary NFL coach. 

In total, the tirade is said to have lasted 40 minutes. Nine months on, UNC supporters might need even longer to vent all their frustrations about Belichick and the chaos currently engulfing Tar Heels football.

It is a mark of all that has happened and all that has gone wrong that, remarkably, Hudson has stayed out of the drama. For once, she is watching from the wings.

But just weeks out from the 2026 season, Bill, Steve and Jen Belichick remain firmly at the center of a college football circus. Here's the abridged account of an offseason that threatens to derail the 74-year-old's UNC tenure: 

• Steve, 39, is away from the team - indefinitely - while he deals with an undisclosed 'medical situation' that leaves UNC without a defensive coordinator
• Belichick's ally and General Manager, Mike Lombardi, has been put on paid administrative leave following a complaint by a former staffer
• Last month, an arrest order was issued for Jen, 35, after she missed a court appearance
• Belichick is embroiled in a $300,000 legal dispute with a painter in Nantucket

Who knows what awaits the Tar Heels once the football actually starts. But on the evidence of Belichick's first season in college football, it won't be dull.

The eight-time Super Bowl winner, who sensationally missed out on becoming a first-ballot Hall of Famer, was appointed in December 2024. Many predicted he would transform UNC and in a way he did – Belichick brought bedlam to Chapel Hill.

He was in charge even if, to many, it appeared that Hudson called the shots. Almost every week, the former cheerleader – 49 years Belichick's junior – was engulfed in another controversy. 

Many centered around her alleged influence over Belichick and her alleged interference in UNC football. She was seen on the sidelines and at the training facility. There were reports the Belichick's family had begun 'digging into' Hudson amid fears she could tear down 'everything he has built.' 

Oh, and the Tar Heels missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2018 after a dismal 4-8 campaign that began with a 48-14 mauling at home by TCU. On August 29, the two teams will meet once more. 

This time, their season opener will take place in Dublin. Perhaps the long flight to Ireland will afford some respite to Belichick, who is paid $10million a year. If only for a few hours. 

Less than a month ago, Belichick sat behind the microphone to preview the new Atlantic Coast Conference season. He didn't give much away – he rarely does. Instead, Belichick offered the usual platitudes.

He spoke of building a 'culture' and learning lessons from the past. He vowed his players would 'keep grinding away every day.'

But he also promised UNC's team is 'stronger' and 'faster' and 'better' than last year. He pointed out, too, that the Tar Heels had brought in about 60 new players. 'I'm excited to see how that comes along,' Belichick said. Among those to come in is a top-10 quarterback prospect, Travis Burgess.

Belichick has added to his staff, too, hiring another experienced coach with his own history involving a woman decades his junior.

Bobby Petrino – a former head coach at Arkansas, Louisville and the Atlanta Falcons – was brought in as UNC's new offensive coordinator on a two-year deal worth a reported $2.35m.

The 65-year-old father of four was fired by Arkansas in 2012 when it was discovered he had an affair with a former volleyball player, whom he then hired and gave a $20,000 gift. 

The affair came to light after a motorcycle crash which left Petrino – who married his wife Becky in 1985 – with a neck injury and scars across his face. He initially told police officers that he was alone on his bike, but it was soon revealed that the coach had a passenger: 25-year-old volleyball player Jessica Dorrell.

Petrino joined UNC in January and a few months later, his boss became embroiled in more off-field drama when it emerged that a painter, Andrew Jackson, was suing Belichick for $300,000 after he was allegedly hurt on the UNC coach's $5m Nantucket property.

According to the lawsuit, Jackson said he fell during a painting job on Belichick's Fair Street home in June 2024 due to 'dangerous and unsafe' working conditions.

Now, though, reports claim Belichick wants a jury trial and has filed a complaint against Levesque Builders Inc as he fights back against the lawsuit. 

That case will rumble on and so, it seems, will the one involving Lombardi. He first worked with Belichick in 1987 and was the legendary coach's first hire after arriving in Chapel Hill. At $1.5m, he is college football's highest-paid GM, but one report suggested his time at UNC could be summed up by the phrase: 'Arrogance plus incompetence is a lethal combination.'

In late July, Lombardi was placed on paid administrative leave amid an ongoing university investigation. 'Because this involves confidential personnel issues, the University will not comment on the nature of the allegations or discuss personnel information,' the school said.

In a statement to ESPN at the time, an attorney for Lombardi said: 'Michael hasn't been told anything about the nature of UNC's investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name, which has already been sullied by baseless statements and innuendo on social media.

'He is fully cooperating with UNC and expects the investigation will be swift, thorough, and fair. Michael would ask that people have the decency to let the process run its course before jumping to any conclusions about the nature of the investigation or whether there's any merit to whatever has been alleged.'

But at the start of training camp, Belichick was asked how Lombardi's absence would impact UNC day-to-day. 'We've made a few adjustments, yeah. But I mean we're working through the process,' he said. Enlightening stuff.

Around the same time, reports claimed the UNC football program is under investigation by the College Sports Commission, the body which examines issues such as name, image and likeness (NIL) deals. 

Then, earlier this week, Belichick announced that his son, 39, is on leave, too. 'It's a medical situation so I really can't make any further comment on that.'

Belichick did not even confirm whether his defensive coordinator will return in time for the Tar Heels' season opener. 'I look forward to getting him back as soon as possible,' he said. 

Understandably, neither the coach nor UNC has provided any details on Steve Belichick's 'medical situation.' Unfortunately, that silence has allowed wild and unsubstantiated rumors to spread on social media.

Belichick Jr had previously spent more than a decade working under his father at the Patriots, helping New England win three Super Bowls. 

He has been married to Jen for around a decade and, in mid-July, it was reported that a judge had ordered her arrest.

According to court records, she had been due in court in Brunswick County, North Carolina, after being caught driving 88mph in a 70mph zone. But Belichick did not show up.

She didn't seem too fazed. The following day, Jen shared a picture of a news report about the arrest order on her Instagram story with the caption: 'I hired an attorney!!!!!' Her lawyer has since said that there was 'no order' for her arrest and that her traffic ticket would be resolved 'on the next court date'.

As a soundtrack to her Instagram story, Jen opted for 'Bad Boy for Life' by P Diddy, Black Rob and Mark Curry. She wasn't in the mood for jokes last November when she confronted Hudson in that office. 

Jen reportedly said she 'didn't f***ing care' if Bill Belichick wanted to fire her husband or disown her. Neither has happened yet but, given the chaos that has engulfed UNC over the past two years, fans could be forgiven for wondering what drama lies around the corner.
