Lionel’s gotta be loving this …
Inter Miami announced Tuesday that they have hired Javier Mascherano as their next head coach, with the new skipper inking a deal through 2027. Mascherano is a former defender of Barcelona, Liverpool and Argentina. The gig will be Mascherano’s first management gig in club soccer.
Mascherano takes the keys from Gerardo Martino, who made a recent announcement that he was leaving his post because of “personal reasons” following one year and some change as the Herons’ leader. Mascherano will kick off his run with Lionel Messi & Co. after things get sorted out with his work documentation. For the last three years, Mascherano has been the manager of the Argentina under-20 team, coaching them in the 2021 U20 World Cup where they made it to the round of 16. Then, he led them in the 2024 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals where they eventually lost to France.
For eight campaigns, Mascherano and Messi were teammates at Barcelona, winning the Champions League together in 2011 and 2015. On top of that, they also secured five LaLiga titles. They were also teammates on the Argentinian national team, claiming victory at the 2008 Olympics with a gold medal.
