An Israeli journalist has described the dramatic attempt to hijack a flight as “our own version of 9/11”, claiming the travesty was prevented in the “very, very last moment”.
Amit Segal, Chief Political Analyst at N12 News, told GB News the incident was prevented by what he described as “two miracles” after a pilot allegedly attacked the captain and attempted to crash the aircraft.
The aircraft initially transmitted squawk code 7700, the international signal for a general emergency, before briefly switching to 7500, indicating unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. It later reverted to 7700.
A co-pilot, understood to be of Omani origin, was said to have stabbed the captain in an attempt to take over the aircraft in what Israeli authorities are now treating as a terrorist attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the assailant “stabbed the other pilot and apparently tried to crash the planes”.
“When we woke up in the morning, it was to find that our own version of 9/11 was prevented,” Mr Segal said, adding: “It was prevented thanks to two miracles.”

“One is the fact that when an Omani pilot stabbed his co-pilot and then tried to crash the plane into the Saudi Arabian desert, there were two pilots who, by coincidence, were there in business class,” he said.
“And it wouldn't be enough unless four brave Israeli passengers actually succeeded in taking control of the terrorists, the terrorist pilots.”
He said the passengers were then able to help the alternative pilots take control of the aircraft.
“You see the pictures now which show that the plane almost crashed,” Mr Segal said.
“It lost altitude of 20,000ft within 40 seconds until someone somehow succeeded in taking control of the flight, thus saving 180 passengers and preventing the Israeli 9/11 or October 7th, or everything in between.”
The top journalist described the incident as “the most astonishing story”, with footage emerging from inside the aircraft.
Mr Segal also highlighted the pilot's nationality and the incident's wider geopolitical significance.
“Another disturbing fact is that the pilot was Omani,” he said.
He argued the incident could have significant implications for Israel's relationship with Gulf states.
“The UAE and Israel are the centre of the anti-Iranian axis,” Segal said, adding: “The Abraham Accords, signed in 2020, enabled the UAE and Israel to cooperate.”
He noted that flights between the UAE and Israel were a relatively recent development following the normalisation agreements.
“When an Omani pilot tries to crash an Israeli-UAE flight, it tries actually to destroy the Abraham Accords too,” Mr Segal said.
“And when he does it in Saudi Arabian skies, I guess he knew that it would make things way, way more difficult.”
“So an Omani pilot, a UAE flight, Israeli passengers on Saudi Arabian soil- that's the poisonous cocktail that almost succeeded some six hours ago.
“It was an attempt to kill as many Israelis as possible. It was prevented in the very, very last moment… It was really a miracle.”
The top analyst also hailed Saudi Arabia's decision to allow the flight to make an emergency landing and to help the stranded passengers.
“And now we have a second historic moment when, for the first time in world history, we see a direct flight, an official flight, from Israel to Saudi Arabia to rescue those passengers,” Mr Segal said.
“So we see that the attempt to actually destroy the peace agreements between Israel and the Muslim world is doomed to fail,” he declared.
