Jenny McCarthy claims Tom Cruise tried to “lure” her and her ex-boyfriend, Jim Carrey, into Scientology at his 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes.
While speaking with former Scientologist Anne Gollert Hill on Thursday’s episode of her eponymous podcast, McCarthy revealed that Cruise “tried to bring [her] into Scientology” while she was dating Carrey.
The “Masked Singer” judge, 53, went on to explain that Cruise, now 64, tried to recruit her and Carrey into Scientology at the rehearsal dinner, where the former couple sat directly across from the bride and groom.
At the time, Cruise and Holmes had recently welcomed their daughter, Suri, now 20.
McCarthy recalled that during the dinner, a nanny brought the baby over to Holmes, prompting the self-described “baby person” to ask if she could hold her.
She said the entire party turned to stare at her, adding, “It looked like ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ … I got the Scientology stare.”
After Holmes “slowly” passed Suri to her, McCarthy monotonously said, “Hi, baby,” before handing the infant back to her mom as “everyone went back to their conversations.”
“I just thought to myself, ‘OK, I am in the belly of the beast right now,'” she added.
McCarthy also recalled Cruise introducing her to his best man, David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology.
“I go, ‘Ha ha, you got picked. Congratulations,’ which made it sound demeaning,” she said, adding that Miscavige “did not like that” as Cruise laughed to “cover the uncomfortable moment.”
McCarthy also said Cruise once invited her and Carrey to his home in Aspen, but Carrey was reluctant to go because he feared they would “try to lure [them] in.”
Elsewhere in the podcast, McCarthy said Holmes “looked like a deer in headlights” during her marriage to Cruise, adding that she would often pull the “Dawson’s Creek” actress aside at events to check if she was OK.
“This was well into the marriage. During the wedding part, she still seemed like Katie, but into the marriage, it seemed there was a shift in her,” McCarthy explained.
She later added, “The juxtaposition between Katie at this time and Tom’s world were very polar opposite.”
McCarthy and Carrey began dating in 2005 but called it quits in 2010, though they have remained close over the years.
The former “View” co-host went on to marry Donnie Wahlberg in 2014, while Carrey recently married his longtime girlfriend, Min Ah, earlier this month.
Cruise and Holmes, for their part, divorced in 2012, and Holmes has recently been linked to artist Jason Bard Yarmosky.
