Since delivering her concession speech some 12 hours after Donald Trump won the 2024 election, Kamala Harris has largely been out of the spotlight.
The vice president resurfaced last week in a pre-recorded video that was seemingly meant to rally her dejected supporters, but it actually just ended up being an opportunity for the internet to speculate about whether she was inebriated while filming it.
On Tuesday’s show, Megyn was joined by the hosts of The Fifth Column – Kmele Foster, Michael Moynihan, and Matt Welch – to discuss the bizarre clip and why Democrats posted it.
Harris’ Message
Last Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee’s official X account posted a 30-second video of Harris that was billed as her “message to supporters.” Check it out below:
The clip reportedly came from a call the vice president held with donors and volunteers in the aftermath of her loss. She recited the same talking points and profundities about “hard work,” “joy,” and “dreams, ambitions, and aspirations” that served as her crutch on the campaign trail, but it was her delivery that made headlines.
Social media users immediately began to wonder if Harris’ slurred, halting speech was a result of one too many drinks. While she was once affectionately dubbed a “wine aunt” by her supporters, Moynihan had a more historical comparison. “Is that Boris Yeltsin,” he quipped in reference to the notoriously drunk Russian leader.
Megyn, for one, was here for Harris’ return. “We almost missed all the fun while we were having our turkey, and that was another turkey took to the airways and gave her farewell message,” she joked. “I don’t know what it was, but it was glorious. Kamala Harris decided to give us an early Christmas gift and speak out on camera.”
The Political Point
While Harris’ presentation in the video did her no favors, Moynihan noted there is a larger political point to be made. “Someone watched that – a whole team of people watched that – and said, ‘Yes, good… Let’s put it out,'” he noted. “The DNC was like, ‘Check this out. This is why we lost.’ That should have been the caption.”
To that point, Megyn said it basically serves as the latest excuse for what went wrong. “The DNC is like, ‘It wasn’t our fault,'” she said. “But have you ever heard so much denial and so many excuses… As it turns out, it wasn’t all her fault… She actually had a terrible team behind her.”
That may be true, but Foster wasn’t willing to let Harris off the hook. “I don’t feel sorry for her at all,” he explained. “She didn’t want to compete for the nomination. She didn’t want there to be some sort of open field. It was just… ‘Hand me the baton the same way I got the VP nod from Joe Biden… Just give me the thing.’ So, I can’t feel sorry for her.”
