Kathleen Turner is brushing off the “fuss” over Michael Douglas confirming that the “Romancing the Stone” co-stars had an affair they kept under wraps for decades.
Turner, 72, addressed the revelation Friday in a brief, nonchalant statement to People.
“Good heavens, what a fuss about something [that happened] 40 years ago!” she quipped. “I love Michael, and I look forward to enjoying the book.”
Douglas, 82, revealed the secret relationship in his upcoming memoir, “One Helluva Ride,” ending four decades of denials that he and Turner were romantically involved.
At the time, the “Wall Street” actor was married to Diandra Luker — with whom he shares son Cameron — though the two were separated and, according to Douglas, both involved in “extramarital affairs.”
He writes that he had a fling with “Romancing the Stone” screenwriter Diane Thomas before meeting Turner, whom he described as “smart, funny and sexy.”
Douglas says they were “immediately attracted to each other” and “fell hard,” but kept their romance hidden from everyone on set, most notably their co-star Danny DeVito.
He describes their relationship as more than a “fly-by-night affair,” writing, “We found each other first as friends, then as co-stars and finally as lovers. Following an exhausting day of shooting in the jungle … I would sneak into her hotel room after everybody was asleep.”
The “Fatal Attraction” star’s liaison came to an end when Luker and Cameron visited Douglas on set and she confronted Turner, making it clear that she and Douglas were still married.
Turner “didn’t want to interfere,” so the pair “ended things.”
“I went back to Diandra,” Douglas writes. “I did it for Cameron, but we shouldn’t have gotten back together. After that first split, it was never the same between us ever again.”
Douglas and Luker eventually divorced in 1995 before he went on to marry Catherine Zeta-Jones, with whom he shares son Dylan, 26, and daughter Carys, 23.
Turner, meanwhile, was married to Jay Weiss from 1984 to 2007, and they share daughter Rachel, who was born in 1987.
The “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” actress offered a few hints over the years, but continued to deny that she and Douglas had an affair.
In 2021, she told the Los Angeles Times she had “certainly had a crush” on Douglas and later told People, “Oh, I was yearning, babe, but he was still married,” while describing their “wonderful sexual tension.”
Most recently, in 2023, when asked how close they actually got while filming “Romancing the Stone,” Turner simply replied, “None of your business.”
