Today’s Focus

Latin American markets open Tuesday under pressure from a firmer dollar and higher US yields. On Monday the dollar index rose 0.22% and the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed about 8 basis points to 5.244%. Gold fell 3.71% and silver 5.41% from Friday’s close.

Regional currencies all lost ground. The dollar rose 1.74% against the Mexican peso, to 17.99, and 0.71% against the Chilean peso, to 968.37. In Colombia, the peso weakened about 1.5% to 3,362 per US dollar at the local close.

Brazil’s data is the main domestic catalyst today. IGP-M inflation is out at 08:00 BRT and unemployment at 09:00. The Treasury’s August central government result follows at 15:30, with a forecast deficit of R$14.2 billion (about US$2.7 billion). The real ended Monday at 5.2255 per US dollar, with the dollar up 0.86%.

Colombia’s central bank meets on Wednesday, 30 September, and is expected to hold its policy rate at 12%. Chile’s IPSA fell 1.06% on Monday and Argentina’s Merval 3.28%, while the Argentine peso was steady at 1,525 per US dollar.

The mood is cautious, not panicked. S&P 500 futures were slightly lower early on Tuesday, and Brent crude futures were higher.

What matters today. The dollar and US yields set the tone, while Brazil’s inflation, jobs and fiscal data decide how hard the real is tested.
