The Lindsay Clancy trial reached a stalemate after the jury failed to reach a verdict on the fourth day of deliberation.
The jury, composed of nine women and three men, failed to reach a verdict on whether Clancy is guilty of first-degree murder. Clancy is on trial for strangling her three young children, aged five, three, and eight months old, with exercise bands in the basement of her home. (RELATED: The Children Are Dead. Notably, the jury has not been sequestered during deliberations and has been permitted to return home between sessions, according to NewsNation.
The prosecution is seeking a first-degree murder conviction, which is defined as deliberate and premeditated murder. The defense is seeking a not guilty verdict by reason of lack of criminal responsibility, the Massachusetts equivalent of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Despite the hung jury, the judge has ordered them to continue deliberating.

Clancy’s defense argued that she had been suffering from postpartum psychosis, which caused her to kill her three children. Clancy claimed to have heard a male voice instructing her to kill her children and herself during the 18-minute window when she strangled the children, cut her wrists and neck, and jumped out the second-story window of her home.
Notably, the 18-minute window was the only time Clancy ever claimed to have experienced postpartum psychosis, which one psychiatrist testified was inconsistent with the condition. She did not report experiencing the hallucinations before or since then.
The prosecution also noted that Clancy had mapped the distance and time to the restaurant and pharmacy where she asked her husband to run errands. Clancy only killed her children once Patrick, her husband, had already left the home, which the prosecution cited as evidence of premeditation.
