Long Island is getting a new 80-mile trail in honor of Teddy Roosevelt – stretching from the former president’s one-time residence in Nassau County all the way out to Montauk.
Local officials announced the “tourism trail” at a press event Monday on the 125th anniversary of the swearing in of the only Long Island resident to become commander-in-chief.
A Roosevelt impersonator joined Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine and other officials at the announcement in Sayville.
“People need to learn our history, to experience it, not just from books or in a college classroom,” the impersonator said.

Brandon Cruz/NY Post“To have a trail is much more interesting — you can absorb so much more about [the history] by being there,” he said.
The trail is planned along the same historical route that the 26th president would travel via horseback from his home in Oyster Bay to his cousin’s house in Sayville, then all the way east to Montauk. The trail will have signs placed on its path with historical facts.
Romaine told The Post he believes creating the trail is important in order to help preserve the region’s rich history.

Brandon Cruz/NY Post“The trail cuts across Nassau County all the way to Eastern Suffolk — all places that were familiar to Teddy Roosevelt, all places that are beautiful to visit,” he said. “It’s a great thing to talk about our history.”
The county is still in the planning phase, and so no official figure for the cost has been estimated as of yet, Romaine said.
Roosevelt was the youngest president in history when he took office in 1901 at age 42. The Republican had served as vice president under President William McKinley, who was assassinated in office.
He was later elected to a full-term.
The noted conservationist was born in Manhattan, but lived as an adult on the island.
