KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia’s former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob is expected to be charged on Aug 27 under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act.
His defence counsel Amer Hamzah Arshad said the MP for Bera, a district in Malaysia’s Pahang, will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court.
“Yes, he will be charged tomorrow at the Sessions Court,” he said when contacted on Aug 26.
This comes after the Sessions Court on Aug 7 postponed proceedings against the former prime minister.
Sessions Court Judge Suzana Hussin said then: “Considering the accused’s health condition, and upon request by the defence counsel which has been agreed on by the prosecution, the court allows for this proceeding involving the reading of charges and recording of plea to be carried out at 9am on Aug 27.”
Amer Hamzah said Ismail Sabri had already experienced health complications when his statement was recorded at the MACC headquarters on Aug 6.
Ismail Sabri has since successfully undergone a leadless pacemaker implantation procedure for an abnormal heart rhythm.
Amer Hamzah added that Ismail Sabri is still under MACC bail and that there are no concerns of him absconding.
The case against Ismail Sabri is believed to be related to the declaration of assets.
He had previously been summoned on multiple occasions over his asset declaration to the MACC.
The MACC earlier seized RM170 million (S$53 million) of cash in foreign currencies, linked to Ismail Sabri, as well as 16kg of pure gold bullion, valued at RM7 million, during an investigation.
The seizures were made during raids on residences and offices linked to MACC’s investigation on Ismail Sabri and his senior aides earlier in 2025. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
