The Marvel Rivals community has called out a Groot player for a type of griefing that they says is “worse than afk or leaving.”

Griefers and trolls can ruin the fun of any multiplayer game, especially if the bad actors decide to target their fellow teammates.

Since the game’s launch in December 2024, Marvel Rivals players have called out toxic behavior like purposefully throwing games. To the chagrin of the community, though, reporting these types of players seldom results in satisfactory penalties.

It doesn’t look like the griefing tactics will slow down anytime soon either, with one user learning that some people have no problem finding new ways to sabotage matches.

Marvel Rivals players slam Groot griefer

A Reddit user shared footage of one of their teammates working hard to prevent the rest of the squad from playing a match.

In the short video, a Groot player runs around their own team’s spawn area and blocks every doorway with the character’s Thornlash Wall ability.

The Redditor called the tactic “worse than afk or leaving,” writing “seriously losing sucks I know, but I would much rather you just leave the match or sit in spawn then to actively prevent your teammates from fighting just so we lose more quickly.”

When pressed for further details, OP explained that the Groot user initiated a surrender because they were losing, yet argued that with three minutes on the clock, the game could’ve gone either way since they were actively changing the team composition.

Several users chimed in to say that all there is to do in these situations is submit a report, though the resulting bans don’t last very long.

Others said they can’t believe the lengths some poeple will go to just to sabotage their own teams. One such comment reads, “Never understood team sabotage, what do you gain from forcing someone else to lose?”

Someone else called this kind of behavior “the biggest issue with the game.”

Another person in the thread went a step further by finding the replay code and reporting the Groot main after the fact.

Apparenlty, trolling of this nature isn’t that rare, since multiple Marvel Rivals fans in the comments claimed to have encountered Groot squadmates who pull the same tricks.

The game may not be at its best when combating trolls, but NetEase has taken great strides to fight back against cheaters. In January, for example, the developer rolled out a new Cheater Detected notification to keep players informed in-game.

Plus, the team has cracked down on cheaters using mouse and keyboard adapters on consoles.
