Scientific experts measure tornadoes using what is known as the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Based on wind speeds and the estimated damage, they assign an EF rating. At the low end, a weak EF-1 tornado has wind speeds of 86-110 mph and causes moderate damage. On the higher end, a violent EF-5 tornado, which would be utterly devastating, ripping sturdy homes off their foundations and turning cars into ballistic missiles, has wind speeds of 200 mph and above.

A literal tornado is not gathering over parts of the Midwest right now. Instead, the Midwest, typically a sturdy Republican stronghold, is overshadowed by a looming political storm that could wipe out GOP candidates across the board. If you could measure this political tornado using the Enhanced Fujita Scale, it would probably clock in at least an EF-3, maybe an EF-4.
