The Richat Structure, widely known as the “Eye of the Sahara,” is a striking geological formation in Mauritania’s section of the Sahara Desert that is recognizable from space due to its concentric ring pattern. Once believed to be the crater of a massive meteorite impact, scientists now understand it as a natural geological dome formed by gradual uplift, the exposure of layered rock, and millions of years of erosion. Because the rocks have varying resistance to erosion, they weathered at different rates, producing the distinctive circular pattern seen today.
