Why Summer Is the Best Season at Merriweather Lakehouse
Arriving at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingThe hotel sits on seven wooded acres right on 27-acre Lake Kittamaqundi, and the floor-to-ceiling windows that impressed us so much in winter have an entirely different effect in summer. The lake is alive. You notice it the moment you walk into the lobby. The light is different here, with trees filling every window in vivid green. From early morning, walkers and joggers fill the 1.4 mile trail. The rooftop pool opens to wide views of the water below. And in the evening, the lake light turns golden and low across the water, exactly the kind of view you want a balcony for.
Columbia’s Lakefront District is in full swing throughout the season, with outdoor festivals, food events, and community gatherings filling the summer calendar. Most are just a short walk from the front door.
🎵 Walk to Legendary Live Music
Merriweather Post Pavilion, recognized by both Billboard and Rolling Stone as one of America’s best outdoor amphitheaters, is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The venue has hosted legendary acts for over 50 years, from Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix to today’s biggest names. Walking to a summer concert and walking back is the move. Book your room when you buy your tickets.
Fourth of July at Merriweather Lakehouse: America’s 250th Birthday
July 4th fireworks from the VIP rooftop pool deck | Photo: Better LivingWe came back for July 4th 2026 and it was even better than 2024. The fireworks go off right across the lake and the scale of the show for America’s 250th was something else entirely. We watched from three spots over the course of the night and each one was completely different. From the rooftop pool deck the whole sky lit up above the water. From the lāk patio the show framed itself through the trees over the lake. And from our own balcony the reflections on the water, the booming sounds, and the explosions filling the sky made it feel like the best seat in Howard County. We have been to a lot of fireworks shows. This one’s incredible.
The hotel’s July 4th celebration is worth planning a full stay around. Here is how the day and night are set up.

The lāk BBQ Buffet
The lāk July 4th BBQ buffet | Photo: Better LivingThe BBQ buffet at lāk runs from 5 PM with last seating at 8 PM, closing when the show begins. Reservations are through OpenTable and are for indoor lāk dining only. We loaded our plates with BBQ chicken wings, beef brisket, grilled corn, watermelon cucumber feta salad, baked beans, and baked mac and cheese. The red, white and blue cupcakes were a nice touch at the end. Get the watermelon margarita to go with it. The buffet was genuinely well done and absolutely worth it. It sold out for 2026, so if you are planning for next year, get on this early. Check for details and reservations here.
The Lawn and Live Music
The community lawn celebration is free and open to everyone. Burgers, hot dogs, drinks, lawn games, a DJ, and live music. This is what kicked off July 4th for us in 2024 and it is exactly the right way to start the night. The drone show and fireworks start just after 9 PM, right across the lake.
The VIP Rooftop Experience
July 4th fireworks at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingIf you can get the Rooftop Escape Package, get it. We experienced the VIP rooftop and it was one of the highlights of the trip. Exclusive access to Eagle Watch above the lake, elevated bites, a cash bar, and fireworks filling the sky right in front of you. The photos do not fully capture what it feels like to be up there with the pool glowing below and the whole show going off across the water. Both the Rooftop Escape Package and the Reserved Fireworks Patio sold out for 2026. If either is on your list for next year, do not wait.
The Rookery Bar on July 4th
The Rookery Bar is open during the celebration with a limited menu on a first come, first serve basis. A good fallback if you missed the buffet reservation, which books up fast.

The Rooftop Pool and Eagle Watch Lounge
The rooftop pool deck at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingOpen Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, the rooftop pool is where summer at Merriweather Lakehouse clicks into place. The deck is warm wood, the loungers are comfortable, and the flags were strung along the railing when we were there for the Fourth. The pool overlooks Lake Kittamaqundi directly below, with the wooded hills of Howard County beyond.
Just inside from the pool is the Eagle Watch Lounge, air conditioned and comfortable with couches, tables, and views looking out over Columbia. It is the kind of place where an afternoon drink turns into a long evening without much effort. There was a table of guests playing cards when we were there, which tells you the vibe. The west-facing windows catch the sunset beautifully in summer. On July 4th the space was set up as the VIP event venue with a pop-up bar and buffet. Worth knowing about even on a regular summer day.
💡 Summer Pool Tips
- Head up early on summer mornings for a quiet swim before the pool fills.
- The rooftop views are wonderful all day, but really special at golden hour, roughly 7 to 8 PM in June and July.
- Outside the summer season, THE Pearl Spa next door has year-round pool and jacuzzi access.
Lake Kittamaqundi in Summer: A Lakefront Playground
Lake Kittamaqundi in Columbia, Maryland | Photo: Better LivingThe 27-acre Lake Kittamaqundi that wraps around the hotel is at its liveliest in summer. The 1.4-mile paved trail is ideal for morning runs or evening strolls, and it connects to the larger Columbia trail network if you want to extend your walk out to Wilde Lake for a 2.9-mile round trip.
Summer is also prime time on the water. The lake sees kayakers, paddleboarders, and serious birders throughout the season, and the lakefront area hosts festivals and community events most weekends. Lake Kittamaqundi is especially beautiful at sunrise in summer. Make a coffee from the in-room Lavazza and take it out to your balcony, or grab one from Osprey Cafe and watch the morning come up over the water.
The gardens and grounds around the hotel are in full bloom in summer. Black-eyed Susans, asters, zinnias, and the pollinators that come with them line the paths. It is the kind of thing you notice on a slow morning walk before anyone else is up.
🦅 Birding in Summer
The lake is active with birds year-round, but summer brings its own cast of characters. Great blue herons are regulars, ospreys hunt over the water throughout the season, and the wooded trail edges hold warblers and flycatchers. For a dedicated birding experience, see our complete guide to a birding getaway at Merriweather Lakehouse with species lists and best viewing times.
Dining at lāk, The Rookery, and Osprey Cafe
Rockfish at lāk restaurant | Photo: Better LivingWe ate at lāk for breakfast and dinner and it’s one of our favorite hotel restaurants in Maryland. The room has a lot going on in the best way: dark tin ceiling, warm leather banquettes, colorful concert posters covering the walls, an open kitchen, and a lakeside patio for when the weather is right. Our dinner server Jayson took great care of us each evening. He knew the menu inside and out, offered perfect suggestions, and made us feel welcomed each night. That kind of service is what turns a good meal into a reason to come back.
lāk Breakfast
Cornflake-crusted French toast at lāk | Photo: Better LivingThe lāk breakfast menu is worth sitting down for rather than grabbing and going. We tried several dishes each morning and the cornflake-crusted French toast was the standout: a crispy golden crust with berry compote on the side, powdered sugar, and a latte with proper latte art. The country breakfast with two eggs your way, thick bacon, hash browns, sourdough toast, and OJ is exactly what it should be. The crab Benedict is the showpiece: two poached eggs over lump crab on English muffins with hollandaise, hash browns alongside. The avocado toast with cherry tomatoes, feta, and candied hazelnuts is a solid lighter option. Get a latte with any of it.
lāk Dinner
Caesar with blackened salmon at lāk | Photo: Better LivingThe rockfish is the summer dinner to order. A golden-crusted fillet over asparagus and fingerling potatoes in a light butter sauce. It’s exactly right for a July evening with the lake outside the window. Start with the fried calamari or shrimp tostadas, both are delicious. The beet salad with arugula, goat cheese, and candied pecans is a good lighter starter. For the Caesar, add the blackened salmon. Seriously, add the salmon. The Seafood Pappardelle is another signature dish worth ordering. For cocktails, the jalapeño margarita in the lāk heron glass has a wonderful kick and paired great with seafood. Dessert comes from Pastry Chef Brian Holland, a graduate of the International Culinary Center who spent over a decade at Baltimore’s Four Seasons. Do not skip it.
The Rookery Bar and Lounge
Crab cake sliders at The Rookery | Photo: Better LivingWe had a late lunch at The Rookery around 3 PM and highly recommend dining in this space. On a hot and humid Maryland summer afternoon, it is exactly where you want to be. The large windows look straight out onto the lake, while the room stays cool and comfortable. You can order from the full lāk menu here, making the lunch options more substantial than you might expect from a bar.
The Rookery Bar and Lounge at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingWe had the beef barbacoa tacos, corn and crab chowder bread bowl, and crab cake sliders. All three were good, but the chowder was the standout. Rich, comforting, and packed with flavor, it was memorable even on one of the hottest days of summer. I hope it stays on the menu through the colder months.
The crab cake sliders on brioche paired with an Old Fashioned served in The Rookery glass are another particularly good pairing.
The Rookery opens at 4 PM for evening service and fills up quickly, so get there early if you are coming for dinner. The venue also hosts intimate live music sets from larger acts, including a performance by The Dangerous Summer on July 3. Keep an eye on the calendar for similar events.
The Osprey Cafe
Morning at Osprey Cafe at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingStart your morning at Osprey Cafe. The Lavazza lattes are excellent, the baked goods are fresh daily, and the breakfast sandwich on focaccia is exceptionally well done. For a grab and go breakfast, it punches well above its weight and was the perfect amount of food for a quick and enjoyable breakfast before our ride home. The cinnamon roll, scone, and homemade Pop-Tart with pink icing are all worth ordering.
Grab a lakeside table in The Rookery or find a seat in Osprey and let the morning take its time. We came back the morning after July 4 before heading home, and it was exactly the right sendoff.
THE Pearl Spa: A Summer Wellness Escape
THE Pearl Spa is a short walk from the hotel. The 27,000-square-foot wellness center offers massages, body wraps, facials, and manicures, plus some experiences you will not find elsewhere: a halotherapy (salt) room, year-round pool and jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, cold plunge, and THE Great Abyss, a multi-sensory meditation experience combining vibrations, magnetic therapy, and layered music for deep relaxation.
Healing Waters Wellness Package
The Healing Waters package includes a coordinated appointment at THE Pearl plus:
- Plush robes and slippers for two at the hotel and at THE Pearl
- A healthy welcome amenity on arrival
- Sound machine, oil diffuser, and essential oils in your room
- Breakfast for two at lāk the next morning
- Late checkout at 1 PM

Summer Rooms: What to Book and Why
Guest room at Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel | Photo: Better LivingThe Standard King and Standard Double Queen rooms are solid starting points with modern furnishings and partial lake views. The Lake View King is our top recommendation and the room we stayed in for July 4th. A king bed plus a private balcony looking directly over Lake Kittamaqundi. In summer that balcony becomes an extension of your room. On the Fourth it becomes one of the best fireworks seats in Howard County.
The Lake View Double Queen gives families the same balcony experience with two queen beds. Junior Suites add a separate living area and mini-fridge, good for a longer stay or a special occasion. The Presidential Suite has a full separate living room, dining area, canopy bed, and panoramic lake views. Limited availability, so book it well in advance.
💡 Summer Booking Tips

Summer in the Merriweather District
Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel at night | Photo: Better LivingThe hotel sits in the middle of Columbia’s rapidly growing Merriweather District, which is at its most active in summer. Outdoor movie nights, live music, and community events fill the calendar from June through September. The District has a growing roster of unique dining options, with new restaurants opening throughout 2026.
A Whole Foods Market sits just a two-minute walk from the lake’s south end, good for grabbing picnic supplies to take down to the lake. The Mall of Columbia, with over 200 shops and restaurants, is just minutes away. Columbia has that planned-community-done-right quality that is surprisingly rare: easy to get around, genuinely pleasant, and never overcrowded.
