The new Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. has announced his engagement to girlfriend Olivia Carter.

It's another huge milestone for the 24-year-old, who earlier in December replaced Kirk Cousins as the Falcons' starting quarterback.

Sharing a video of the engagement, Penix wrote: 'I will love you forever. I can't wait to do life with you.'

The video shows the stunning efforts Penix went to in order to wow his partner. He had flowers at the ready and huge letters spelling out 'MARRY ME' that left Carter lost for words.

In his first game for the Falcons, Penix led his team to a win over the New York Giants with a 34-7 triumph.

He completed 18 out of 27 passes for 202 yards and had only one interception to keep the Falcons in the hunt for the playoffs.

Penix's next test comes against the Washington Commanders on Sunday Night Football later this weekend.

The Falcons took Penix Jr. with the eighth pick of this year's NFL Draft - a surprising move given that they had already signed Cousins on a lucrative four-year, $180million deal.

As Cousins struggled with the season ongoing and the Falcons having a real chance of making the playoffs, head coach Raheem Morris made the bold decision to bring Penix Jr. in with three regular season games left to go.

'We have been digging as much as we could dig in order to make things work,' Morris explained.

'We wanted to play better at QB and we felt like we had a chance to play better.'
