No, there will not be a Minecraft 2. Mojang has no plans for a proper sequel to the best-selling game of all time, comparing it to there being an “Earth 2.”
It’s been 15 years of Minecraft and the game is more popular today than it ever has been. With over 300 million copies sold, it’s far and away the biggest release the medium has ever seen, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
There’s a Minecraft movie hitting the big screen in April and developers at Mojang just unveiled the biggest graphical update the game has ever seen. It’s all happening and yet, many still wonder if there will ever be a full-fledged sequel.
Given the game’s original creator, Markus ‘Notch’ Persson recently teased working on a Minecraft follow-up, rumors have been swirling. Putting a stop to it all, however, Mojang has chimed in on the matter, firmly shutting down any notion of a Minecraft 2 ever happening.

Minecraft is still going strong as Mojang just unveiled its biggest graphical update yet.
Minecraft 2 would be like getting an “Earth 2” according to Mojang
Speaking with IGN, Minecraft’s Executive Producer Ingela Garneij joked about the topic of a sequel. “Do you think we’re going to have an Earth 2? No, no, there’s no Minecraft 2.”
Moving forward, the plan is to continue supporting the original game for as long as possible. Devs currently have a desire to double the lifespan of Minecraft, ensuring it “exists at least 15 years more.”
Admittedly, there are some hardships in the way of accomplishing the three decades of support Mojang intends. “The age of the game is a challenge,” Garneij said. “It’s a 15-year-old platform, 15-year-old technology that slows us down in one sense. So other new games have new engines, and they can run really fast.”
Fortnite is a prime example, having swapped engines amid its most popular period, all to ensure long-term sustainability. Counter-Strike 2 is another example, as Valve brought the iconic shooter forward with a raft of technological upgrades.
Minecraft could follow suit over the next 15 years, jumping to a more sophisticated engine. However, that’s all the studio is even remotely considering. If Mojang has its way, the original Minecraft will live on in name for a long time to come. Minecraft 2 will simply remain a pipe dream.
