A miracle baby is safe and healthy after its mother, a 29-year-old police officer, was accidentally shot by her partner inside an Argentina precinct.
The shocking incident unfolded the morning of Sept. 14 when Marian Jofré and her partner, Cristian Albarracín, were handling administrative duties inside the 34th Precinct in La Bebida, a city in the western province of San Juan.
Albarracín was handling his service weapon when it somehow discharged and struck Jofré in the back, according to the local prosecutor’s office.
Jofré, who is six months pregnant, was treated on the scene and rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.
The wounded cop, who has an 8-year-old daughter and has been on the force for three years, was transferred to another medical facility, where she underwent surgery Sept. 17 to remove the bullet.
Jofré, who is married to a police officer, was discharged from the hospital the day after the operation and was never at risk of losing her pregnancy, local news reports said.
The gender of the baby and delivery date are unknown.
Meanwhile, Jofré’s cousin, Carla Barman, criticized authorities for failing to provide information to the family more than eight hours following the shooting.
“The media were already saying she was stable, even though we knew nothing,” Barman told Telesol Diario. “Some outlets even reported that he had passed away. Yet, as a family, no one came out to give us an answer.”
Albarracín was taken in for questioning and told the prosecutor’s office that he and another police officer had been involved in the chase of a crime suspect.
He had loaned the cop the weapon during the operation but was not aware that it was still loaded when the other officer returned it after arriving at the police station.
Investigators have believed from the outset that the shooting was accidental.
Albarracín was released the same day Jofré was operated and was charged with negligent injury and failure to perform the duties of a public official.
His current role with the police department is unknown.
A judge gave prosecutors eight months to complete its criminal investigation and ordered Albarracín to present himself every month at a local precinct.
He must also seek approval before traveling outside Argentina and is barred from obstructing the collection of evidence or the investigation.
