“The Gallerist,” a Miami-set satire of the art world starring Natalie Portman and Jenna Ortega, has been acquired by Roadside Attractions and Vertical.
The movie will open in theaters on Dec. 4, nearly a year after it premiered at Sundance Film Festival.
Cathy Yan directed “The Gallerist,” a dark comedic thriller in which Portman portrays an artist who is trying to make a name for herself at Art Basel in Miami and ends up trying to cover up a fatal accident by selling the dead body as a work of art. Sterling K. Brown, Zach Galifianakis, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Catherine Zeta-Jones round out the cast.
“Cathy Yan’s wildly original film was a winner for us at Sundance,” Roadside Attractions Co-Presidents Howard Cohen and Eric d’Arbeloff and Vertical CEO and Partner Peter Jarowey said. “She assembled a phenomenal ensemble cast led by Natalie Portman’s standout performance as a woman at the intersection of art and crime, revealing a dazzling comic edge along the way. It’s as fun as it is terrifying.”
James Pedersen wrote the film, produced by Ash Sarohia, Sophie Mas and Portman, Jonathan King, Tom McCarthy, Rae Baron and Zola Elgart Glassman.
Variety’s chief film critic Peter Debruge described “The Gallerist” as “facile but fun.” In his review, he wrote that “the intermittently clever movie is full of art-world in-jokes, but seems oblivious to its many plot holes.”
Roadside’s upcoming releases include the Meghan Markle-produced doc “Cookie Queens” and horror film “Buddy,” featuring Cristin Milioti and Keegan-Michael Key. Vertical has “The Weight” starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, as well as “The Magic Faraway Tree” led by Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy.
