CV NEWS FEED // A federal court in Reno is poised to reconsider an injunction from 1985 that has prevented the enforcement of Nevada’s parental notification law for minors seeking abortions.
According to an October 29 news release from Nevada Right to Life, the statute being reconsidered, known as NRS 442.255, would require that at least one parent be notified before a minor can undergo an abortion, with provisions for a judicial bypass.
This law has been effectively dormant for nearly 40 years due to a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood, according to the press release. This has resulted in young girls being able to obtain abortions without parental knowledge, often facilitated by adults with harmful intentions, such as abusers and traffickers, Nevada Right to Life reported.
Melissa Clement, executive director of Nevada Right to Life, stressed the importance of protecting minors and restoring parental rights.
“Whether one agrees with abortion or not, we can all agree that minor girls deserve to be protected,” she said. “If a young girl is being abused, forced, or coerced into an abortion, parents should know.”
“For the last 40 years parents have been completely oblivious to what their daughters are facing and that truly is heartbreaking to think about,” she continued, “but there is only one source to blame for this and it is Planned Parenthood.”
Nevada Right to Life highlighted the unique nature of abortion among other medical procedures, noting that it is the only one that does not require parental consent or notification.
Clement expressed optimism that lifting the injunction would help align abortion laws with other Nevada regulations, which require parental approval for activities such as ear piercings or tattoos.
“Planned Parenthood has preyed on the lives of young innocent girls for too long and hopefully that reign will soon come to an end,” Clement said.
The news release also issued a stark warning against Question 6, a measure that would enshrine abortion in the state constitution. Planned Parenthood has allocated $10.2 million to promote this initiative, Nevada Right to Life reported.
If the measure passes, according to Nevada Right to Life, “abortion will be an individual fundamental right without limit. No doctors. No safety regulations. All nine months. No parental involvement for underage girls seeking an abortion.”
