The Republican-controlled Congress is officially sworn in.
Donald Trump’s victory is certified.
Now it’s time to get to work on policies to help the American people.
At the top of the agenda: national security. The Senate begins confirmation hearings for key Cabinet members next week—starting with Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth.
We’ve heard whispers that Senate Majority John Thune, R-SD, believes Hegseth has the necessary votes to be confirmed. But nothing is final until the votes are cast.
After the horrifying terrorist attack in New Orleans, the urgency to confirm Trump’s FBI and intelligence nominees has never been greater.
We need Trump’s bold reformers who will protect Americans from actual criminals—not spy on Catholics or target peaceful pro lifers.
While the Senate focuses on these confirmation fights, the House should zero in on a robust legislative agenda.
But Republicans hold a razor-thin 219-215 majority. If all 215 Democrats remain in lockstep (very likely), then all it takes is just two Republicans to torpedo any GOP-backed legislation.
That’s why we Republicans in Congress must work together as a team to deliver on the promises they made to the American people.
ON THE AGENDA:
The 2017 Trump tax cuts are set to expire at the end of this year. If Congress fails to act, just about everyone will get a tax increase.
What’s more, the Child Tax Credit will shrink in half to just $1,000.
We’re calling on Congress to renew the Trump tax cuts. And we fully back Vice President-elect JD Vance’s call to expand the Child Tax Credit to $5,000.
Families have been crushed by four years of Joe Biden’s inflationary policies and war on affordable energy. The last thing American families need is a higher tax bill!
There is also a push to include a tax break to support low-income students through charitable contributions to scholarship funds. Many states have enacted school choice laws, but there are still millions of students trapped in mediocre or failing schools that could benefit from this plan. We will be watching it closely in the weeks and months ahead.
Most importantly, we will fight hard to get Congress to cut funding for abortion “providers” like Planned Parenthood. Getting the federal government out of the abortion business meshes well with President Trump’s desire to have this issue settled in the states.
CatholicVote is already working with Trump’s team and our lawmakers on Capitol Hill to deliver real wins for families in 2025. Ours is a pivotal moment in American history, and together we fought hard to get here.
Let’s make it count.
