We look ahead to Sunday’s Group G clash in Vancouver with our New Zealand vs Egypt prediction and preview. Can either side end their quest to finally win at the FIFA World Cup?

New Zealand vs Egypt: The Key Insights

  • Following 25,000 pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer, Egypt have been assigned a 58.5% chance of posting their first World Cup win.
  • Ranked 56 places below their next opponents by FIFA – and with just an 18.5% chance of victory – New Zealand will assume their familiar position as underdogs.
  • While the All Whites have yet to taste success after seven games at this level, only Honduras (nine) have played more often at the World Cup without winning than Egypt (eight).

After both kicked off their Group G campaign in the United States with draws, New Zealand and Egypt will head north to Canada for Sunday’s potentially pivotal contest.

While the Pharaohs were held to an opening draw by Belgium, their next opponents were twice pegged back by Iran, leaving all four teams locked on one point.

Motherwell winger Elijah Just continued the fine form he showed last season at club level, becoming the first New Zealander to score more than once in a World Cup match.

Though they fell short of victory, Darren Bazeley’s men certainly showed positive intent: their three shots on target within the first 30 minutes were as many as New Zealand managed throughout the entire 2010 tournament.

Not only did they seize the lead twice – more times than across their first six World Cup games combined – they also recorded 21 touches in the opposition box, posted 51.5% possession and completed 376 passes.

These were all New Zealand’s highest figures in one World Cup match, suggesting a squad widely hailed as their most talented ever could be ready to claim maximum points.

Once part-time tourists, the All Whites are now a credible participant, drawing each of their last four fixtures at the World Cup. Incidentally, only Group G rivals Belgium have ever played out five successive draws (1998 to 2002).

His nation’s all-time top scorer and inspirational captain, Chris Wood set up both of Just’s strikes against Iran.

Leading from the front, Wood also applied 41 high-intensity pressures inside the Iranian half, and a similar contribution may be required if New Zealand are to break through this weekend.

While history will weigh heavily on Bazeley’s side, Egypt have an even greater burden to bear. Despite being the first African nation ever to feature at the World Cup back in 1934, they are also awaiting an elusive victory.

Fumbling their latest chance, the Pharaohs were on course to beat Belgium after Emam Ashour netted his nation’s fastest goal at a global finals (timed at 19:00). However, his stunning strike was not quite enough.

For the first time at a World Cup, Egypt led at half-time, but Mohamed Hany‘s own goal as he tried to prevent Romelu Lukaku from scoring cost them a first win.

Seven-time African champions, Egypt have yet to demonstrate that status on the biggest stage, but if they are to do so this year, then a certain Mohamed Salah remains central to their hopes.

The Liverpool legend played a role in 60% of their goals in an unbeaten qualifying campaign (nine goals, three assists), before setting up Ashour’s explosive finish against Belgium on his 34th birthday.

Like several other ageing stars at this year’s finals – plus the relatively low-profile Wood, who is also 34 – this may be Salah’s last dance.

Rookie striker Hamza Abdelkarim represents the new breed; by replacing his venerable skipper after 76 minutes on Monday, he became Egypt’s youngest World Cup player (18y 165d).

The Barcelona youngster’s time to start will surely come, but head coach Hossam Hassan – a clinical finisher in his own playing days – is set to pair Salah with Omar Marmoush once again.

New Zealand vs Egypt Head-to-Head

Not only have these nations never met at a World Cup, this will be New Zealand’s first World Cup match against any African opponent.

Egypt are unbeaten in three previous meetings with the All Whites, recording two wins and one draw. The most recent was a 1-0 friendly victory in Cairo two years ago.
