Thieves have broken into the home of Pittsburgh Penguins alternate captain Evgeni Malkin and stolen his three Stanley Cup championship rings, according to reporter Jennifer Borrasso with Pittsburgh CBS station KDKA.

The station reports that Malkin's home in the Pittsburgh suburb of Sewickley Heights was burgled on Saturday and the three rings are missing.

KDKA reports the back door of Malkin's home was kicked in and that both the alarm system and security cameras happened to be down at the time. Additionally, his safe had been kept open.

At the time of the break-in, the Penguins were playing a matinee game against the Ottawa Senators. A call to 911 was placed hours later.

Allegheny County Police confirmed to KDKA that they are investigating a burglary in the area. A spokesperson added that they're looking to speak with anyone with more information on the situation.

Malkin is the latest athlete to be victim of a break-in - joining a list of professional sports superstars who have had their homes invaded.

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar forward Evgeni Malkin has been the victim of a burglary

Malkin won three Stanley Cups with the Penguins and all three of his Cup rings are missing

Malkin is one of the greatest players in Penguins history and is top-50 in all-time NHL points

Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his house broken into back on October 6. 48 hours later, the home of his Chiefs teammate, Travis Kelce, had also been hit by thieves

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow had his house broken into back in mid-December as he was playing a game on Monday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys.

Homes are not the only thing that thieves are targeting. Late in December, a vehicle belonging to the fiancée of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was also hit by burglars

Malkin is not the only NHL star who has been victim of these kinds of invasions of privacy. Last year, Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin also had his home targeted

At the end of last year, the FBI sent a warning out to American professional sports leagues about potential organized burglaries that are specifically targeting superstar athletes.

Malkin is one of the greatest Russians to ever play in the NHL and is on the Mount Rushmore of Penguins players. Drafted second overall in 2004 - behind fellow countryman Alex Ovechkin - Malkin won Stanley Cup titles with Pittsburgh in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

A seven-time All-Star, Malkin's 1,328 points are the third most in franchise history behind fellow legends Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby. His point total is the 34th best in NHL history and is the third-best among active players (behind Crosby and Ovechkin).
