Nintendo has filed seven DMCA anti-circumvention notices in a single day, wiping out more than 400 Switch emulator repositories from GitHub.
The sweep, carried out on August 17, 2026, hit several major emulation projects and their entire fork networks at once.
Suyu takes the biggest hit
According to TorrentFreak, 401 repositories were removed in total, with 311 of those belonging to a single network tied to Suyu, the emulator that rose to prominence after Yuzu’s 2024 collapse.
Suyu had already been in an uncertain spot before the sweep. Its maintainer announced back in April that they were stepping away from the project entirely.
Skyline, an Android emulator whose team voluntarily stopped development in 2023, still lost 29 dormant repositories, code that had sat untouched for years. MonoNX and several Yuzu forks made up the remaining notices.
Nintendo cites two prior legal wins, but neither went to trial
Every notice leans on the same argument. Nintendo says the emulators use unauthorized copies of its cryptographic keys, or prod.keys, to decrypt Switch games without authorization, violating the DMCA.
Each notice cites two precedents. The first is Yuzu creator Tropic Haze’s 2024 $2.4 million settlement. The second is a default judgment last October against streamer Jesse Keighin, ordered to pay $17,500. Neither case saw a court actually weigh the emulator argument on its merits.
GitHub says it reviews circumvention claims carefully and will “err on the side of the developer” when validity is unclear, which is why the pushback matters here.

One X user challenged that directly, arguing Nintendo targeted a non-functional build of MonoNX with no decryption functionality at all, calling it invalid and open to a counternotice.
Others doubted the sweep changes much. “At this point, this is like trying to bail out a boat with a teaspoon,” one X user wrote, noting new emulation projects with no connection to Yuzu already exist.
