The 2026 NWSL season reaches its decisive stage, with Gotham FC favourites to claim their first Shield, while seven teams battle for the remaining five play-off places. Elsewhere, Racing Louisville and Chicago Stars face difficult questions after disappointing seasons.
The 2026 NWSL season has been the league’s biggest yet, with a record 16 teams competing across a 30-match regular-season schedule.
With just three games remaining, the race for top spot and the eight play-off places is entering its decisive phase. The regular-season winners claim the NWSL Shield, while the top eight compete for the NWSL Championship.
Here’s what the Opta supercomputer predicts across the remaining three games.

Having won the Championship for the second time last season, Gotham FC carried that momentum into 2026.
They sit four points clear at the top and are favourites to claim their first Shield, finishing top in 83.3% of the Opta supercomputer’s 10,000 simulations. San Diego Wave (11.8%) and Washington Spirit (4.8%) are the only other contenders. The Goth are also unbeaten in 12 home matches across all NWSL competitions (W8 D4), their longest such run in club history.
Gotham, San Diego and Washington are all given a 100% probability of qualifying for the play-offs, with seven other teams competing for the remaining five places. Seattle Reign (32.5%) and expansion side Denver Summit (14%) face the steepest climbs, though every other contender has at least a 75% chance of progressing.

Saturday’s meeting between Gotham and Washington could have major implications for the Shield race. A Spirit and Wave victory on Matchday 28 would cut the gap to one point between first and second, keeping the title race alive heading into the final rounds.
Further down the table, Kansas City Current have struggled to replicate the dominance that brought them last season’s Shield. Now fifth, they have been spearheaded by talisman Temwa Chawinga, who leads the team for goals (12) and goal involvements (15). Opta gives Kansas City the highest probability of finishing fourth, doing so in 21.3% of simulations. Even three wins from their remaining games would leave them facing their lowest league finish since 2023.
The two expansion teams have endured challenging inaugural campaigns. Denver Summit are projected to finish 10th in 60.9% of simulations, while Boston Legacy are most likely to finish 13th (57.1%). Denver have added star power with Lindsey Heaps arriving from Lyon in June, but both clubs face the challenge of establishing themselves in an increasingly competitive league.
Unlike most major European football leagues, the NWSL has no promotion or relegation.
Nevertheless, a disappointing campaign can raise questions about a club’s competitiveness and long-term stability. Racing Louisville know that all too well; after finishing sixth last season and reaching their first-ever play-offs, they are projected to finish 15th in 72.7% of simulations.
Their struggles extend off the pitch, with questions surrounding the long-term viability of the club under owner John Neace’s group and reports that USWNT striker Emma Sears has submitted a transfer request.
At the bottom, founding club Chicago Stars are projected to finish last in 99.7% of simulations, having collected just 17 points from 27 matches. A second consecutive bottom-place finish looks almost inevitable, and they risk recording the lowest points tally in their NWSL history.
Their previous low was 20 points last season, meaning they need four points from their final three games to surpass it. Chicago have won just five matches all season and are enduring an eight-game away winless run (D1 L7).
With the Shield still up for grabs, five play-off places undecided and established clubs facing difficult questions, the final three rounds promise an intriguing conclusion to the regular season.
