About one-third of newly reported cases of HIV infection in Hong Kong are low-risk groups, including housewives with only one sexual partner, health authorities have found.
The Centre for Health Protection warned on Thursday that low-risk groups had a high possibility of identifying their infections at a later stage due to limited awareness, calling for them to get check-ups.
The warning came despite the number of cases declining nine years in a row. There were 365 cases of HIV infection last year, dropping from 725 in 2015.
A total of 74 new Aids cases were reported last year, dropping from 101 in 2023.
“We always feel that HIV infection is something that only concerns certain high-risk groups,” said Bonnie Wong Chun-kwan, a consultant with the Centre for Health Protection’s special prevention programme.
But she noted that about a third of the newly reported cases were not in high-risk groups, with more than 60 per cent being late presenters who had their infection detected at a later stage.
