More than 50 young people are reported missing from Lamu County on Kenya’s coast, and security officials fear many crossed into Somalia to join al-Shabaab. The story matters to Washington because a base used by US forces sits in the same county.
What We Know
Lamu County Commissioner Stephen Sangolo told the Nation that police began receiving reports of missing youths a few days before and after the Lamu Maulid Festival, held in early September 2026. Taifa Leo, a Swahili-language daily, reports that more than 50 young people have vanished.
The Lamu Security Committee says most of those missing are suspected to have crossed into Somalia to join al-Shabaab. Intelligence reports cited by the commissioner put the number of residents who crossed in secret at about 50.
Sangolo named the worst-hit villages on Pate Island as Siyu, Faza, Tchundwa, Mbwajumwali, Myabogi, Shanga-Rubu and Kizingitini. Pate is one of the islands of the Lamu archipelago, off Kenya’s northern coast.
County Police Commander Shadrack Ruto confirmed that tens of locals are missing and asked the public to share any information that could help trace them. He also warned families that recruiters are active.

How Recruitment Is Said to Work
Taifa Leo quotes police as saying that recruiters promise unemployed young men jobs, senior positions and high salaries. The warning points to joblessness as the way in.
The Nation’s headline refers to a hidden recruitment network. We have seen no published evidence on who runs it or how it is paid for.
The Security Response
Multi-agency security teams are on high alert, and Sangolo says investigations into the whereabouts of the youths continue. Patrols have been stepped up along known transit corridors and at border points such as Kiunga, on the Kenya-Somalia border.
Lamu has lived with this threat for years. Security forces have run an operation in the Boni Forest since September 2015, and an attack on the town of Mpeketoni in June 2014 was claimed by al-Shabaab.
Why Lamu Matters to Washington
Lamu is home to Manda Bay, a Kenyan military airfield used by US forces. On 5 January 2020, al-Shabaab fighters broke into the base and killed a US soldier and two US Defense Department contractors, according to US Africa Command.
Washington named Kenya a major non-NATO ally in 2024, the first sub-Saharan African country to receive the status. The label opens defence trade and cooperation benefits, but it carries no security guarantee.
Lamu Port is also where the first cargo for the Dangote refinery docked, as we reported. A security scare on this coast therefore touches energy and investor questions as well as tourism.
What Is Not Known
Officials have not given one clear number. Their figures range from “tens” of missing locals to “over 50” to about 50 who crossed into Somalia.
It is also unclear how many left willingly, whether any were taken by force, and whether anyone has reached Somalia. We have not been able to confirm any arrests tied to the disappearances.
What It Means for Travelers and US Readers
Travelers to Lamu should treat the coast as a place where security advice can change quickly. The US State Department’s Kenya advisory and local police alerts are the right places to check before a trip.
For readers following counter-terrorism, the story shows al-Shabaab’s pull reaching into Kenya, not only inside Somalia. It also supports the police warning that unemployment is a lever for recruiters, a theme in our Somalia explainer.
