Party host dies after falling on wine glass — but cops say it may not be a freak accident

A woman died when she fell on a wine glass in an apparent freak accident at home — but now police are investigating her death as a crime following contradicting witness accounts, according to reports.

Ilda Beatriz Goyochea, 32, died from her injuries in the hospital nearly a week after the incident at a dinner party at her home in La Rioja in northwestern Argentina, according to Argentinian outlet La Voz.

Her death was initially reported as a freak accident by witnesses, but Goyochea’s family’s attorney said in a complaint that the neck wound was a straight cut between three to four inches long, raising questions about whether her death was the result of something more sinister.

“That characteristic would not be compatible with a wound caused by a broken glass, which normally produces an irregular cut,” Fernando Gabriel Brizuela said.

Two people who were at the party that night were taken into preventative custody after a judge noted contradictions in their accounts of what happened.

The judge also ordered the Homicide Division of the La Rioja Police to investigate.

“An arrest warrant of this nature is never issued without solid grounds,” Brizuela said.

However, the suspects’ attorney claimed the dinner party included old friends who had no ill will toward Goyochea. They maintain that it was a horrific accident and nothing more.

“It was a gathering of friends. They’ve known each other for years, and there were no prior conflicts between them,” lawyer Soledad Varas said.

A lack of a motive does not mean there was no intent, the prosecution argued.

An autopsy will determine whether such a wound could have been caused by broken glass.

Goyochea’s family is demanding answers about what happened that night — including how long it took for the party attendees to call for help, according to La Voz. 

She was first taken to a private clinic and then transferred to a hospital due to the severity of her injuries. She died nearly a week later.

Investigators are also checking security cameras to see if anything suspicious was going on outside of the home that night.
