CHICAGO, IL — A plastic shopping bag that accidentally blew inside the Chicago Museum of Modern Art sold at auction for $10 million.
The plastic bag, presumed to be from the nearby Robbie's Delicatessen, got stuck on a pole on the second level of the museum. Presumed to be some sort of brilliant commentary on American consumerism, the bag was hailed as a "triumph of modern art" and fetched a record sum at auction.
"It's absolutely brilliant. If only we knew who the genius was behind the magnificent work," said modern art collector Vance Gallagher. "This piece expresses so poignantly the nihilistic milieu arising from the existential transformation of a capitalistic culture collapsing under the weight of its own prosperity. One cannot look at this plastic bag and not be struck by the deft touch of the artist as he or she calls us to reconsider, at a fundamental level, what is truly ours. This is the vanguard of the modern art movement."
After receiving marked critical acclaim, the bag was put up for auction by the museum. "Not knowing where this work of art came from or who the artist was, we did not feel right to keep it," said museum curator Denny Janskey. "Truly, we will miss the bag. It was easily the most beautiful piece in the entire museum. If only we could track down the mysterious artist!"
At publishing time, a review of security footage had revealed that the bag blew into the museum after it slipped out of the hand of a homeless vagrant who had been using it to store clothes.
