PlayStation is knuckling down on its exclusives, officially revealing that every single-player game developed in-house will be a platform exclusive.
The exclusivity war between consoles has been going on for decades now. Each company regularly aims to release various games that can only be played on their specific console, meaning fans need to buy an Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo console if they want to play certain games.
Recently, the rivalry has intensified, with Xbox making Gears of War an exclusive and PlayStation revealing its plans for future releases. Based on the company’s current strategy, players who want to experience its single-player exclusives will need a PS5.
Single-player games will be PlayStation exclusives
Speaking to Famitsu and translated via ResetEra, PlayStation’s CEO, Hideaki Nishino, confirmed that the company’s “current main policy is that, for single-player games developed in-house, we will further refine the value of the gaming experience that PlayStation can offer,” explaining that single-player games will be PlayStation exclusives.
Insomniac GamesHowever, this doesn’t extend to multiplayer or live-service games, with Nishino adding: “At the same time, we believe it is important for live-service games to reach a wider audience through online multiplayer, so we continue to view releases on both PS5 and PC as the standard.”
This was further clarified by reliable insider Jason Schreier, who explained that “During a town hall a few weeks ago, Hermen Hulst told staff that their single-player narrative games will be PlayStation only, and he explained that they were inconsistent with their PC releases, they didn’t make enough money, and they want to keep their IP aligned to their own platform.”
So, for multiplayer games, PC players will likely get access. Whether it’s upon release or later down the line is yet to be revealed. But if it’s a single-player adventure, like the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine, then it’ll be PlayStation only for the foreseeable future.
