The Pokemon Go Great League: Mega Edition brings Mega-Evolved Pokemon into the 1,500 CP format, giving trainers new options when building their best team for the Go Battle League.
With a much lower CP cap than Ultra or Master League, only certain Mega Evolutions can compete effectively alongside the Great League’s established PvP picks. Choosing the right Mega and supporting Pokemon is key to getting the most out of your team in the Go Battle League.
Here are the best Pokemon for the Great League: Mega Edition, including the strongest Mega Evolutions, top picks, and teams to use.
Best team for the Pokemon Go Great League: Mega Edition
DEXERTOOne of the best teams you can use in Pokemon Go’s Great League: Mega Edition is Mega Sableye, Ninetales, and Tinkaton. These three are among the strongest Pokemon and should give you coverage against most common opponents.
An alternate team players can try out includes Mega Altaria, Forretress, and Mimikyu.
As with any League or Cup, it’s impossible to say what a true “best” team looks like in the Great League: Mega Edition, as it really depends on the Pokemon your opponent sends out – and you won’t know that until the battle begins.
Still, a few Pokemon can perform well in most situations, which we’ve listed below alongside their optimal movesets and weaknesses.
Best Great League: Mega Edition Pokemon
Corviknight
NIANTIC/DEXERTO- Fast Move: Sand Attack
- Charged Moves: Air Cutter and Payback
- Type: Flying/Steel
- Resistances: Bug, Grass, Poison, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Steel, and Ground
- Weaknesses: Electric and Fire
Corviknight’s Flying/Steel typing makes it a tough Pokemon to crack in the Great League: Mega Edition. It packs an impressive ten resistances while only fearing Electric and Fire attacks, giving it plenty of opportunities to stay on the field as Sand Attack builds energy.
Air Cutter provides its main source of Flying-type STAB, helping Corviknight pressure Fighting, Grass, and Bug opponents. Payback gives the moveset a completely different angle, trading speed for heavier Dark-type coverage that can punish Ghost and Psychic creatures.
Fearow
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Peck
- Charged Moves: Drill Peck and Drill Run
- Type: Normal/Flying
- Resistances: Ghost, Ground, Bug, and Grass
- Weaknesses: Electric, Ice, and Rock
Fearow is a more attack-minded choice for this league, relying on quick pressure rather than trying to outlast the opposition. Peck supplies consistent Flying-type damage, while its immunity-level resistances to Ghost and Ground can create opportunities to bring it into battle safely.
The combination of Drill Peck and Drill Run is where Fearow really earns its versatility. The former offers reliable Flying STAB for handling Fighting, Grass, and Bug-types, whereas Drill Run flips several potential counters by threatening Electric, Rock, and Steel Pokemon with super-effective Ground damage.
Clodsire
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Poison Sting
- Charged Moves: Earthquake and Stone Edge
- Type: Poison/Ground
- Resistances: Poison, Electric, Rock, Fighting, Fairy, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water
Clodsire brings serious staying power to the Great League: Mega Edition, where its bulk gives it time to build toward some hard-hitting attacks. Poison Sting is light on direct damage but generates energy quickly, while its Poison/Ground typing gives it valuable resistances to Fairy, Fighting, Rock, and Electric attacks.
Once Clodsire has banked enough energy, opponents have to respect two very different threats. Earthquake delivers huge Ground-type STAB against Steel, Electric, Poison, Rock, and Fire Pokemon, while Stone Edge catches Flying and Ice-types that can cause Clodsire trouble.
Feraligatr
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Ice Beam
- Type: Water
- Resistances: Steel, Fire, Water, and Ice
- Weaknesses: Grass and Electric
Feraligatr is built to keep battles moving in the Great League: Mega Edition, with Shadow Claw combining strong neutral pressure with quick energy generation. Its pure Water typing is straightforward but effective, leaving just Grass and Electric as weaknesses while giving it useful resistance to Fire, Steel, Water, and Ice.
Hydro Cannon is the engine behind Feraligatr’s offensive game, delivering powerful Water-type STAB without demanding much energy. Ice Beam takes longer to reach, but its coverage is valuable against Grass-types that threaten Feraligatr directly, as well as Dragon, Flying, and Ground opponents.
Jumpluff
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Fairy Wind
- Charged Moves: Energy Ball and Acrobatics
- Type: Grass/Flying
- Resistances: Ground, Grass, Fighting, and Water
- Weaknesses: Ice, Fire, Flying, Poison, and Rock
Jumpluff isn’t about overwhelming opponents with Fast Move damage. Instead, Fairy Wind rapidly fills its energy bar, giving this bulky Grass/Flying-type plenty of chances to fire off attacks while its resistances to Ground, Water, Fighting, and Grass help it stick around.
Its two Charged Moves cover very different targets. Energy Ball puts Water, Ground, and Rock Pokemon under pressure and can potentially drop their Defense, while Acrobatics delivers a much bigger burst of Flying-type STAB when Jumpluff needs to threaten Fighting, Grass, or Bug opponents.
Ninetales
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Ember
- Charged Moves: Weather Ball (Fire) and Energy Ball
- Type: Fire
- Resistances: Bug, Fairy, Fire, Grass, Ice, and Steel
- Weaknesses: Ground, Rock, and Water
Ninetales brings a steady stream of Fire pressure, with Ember doing meaningful STAB damage before Charged Moves even enter the equation. Its six resistances also give it useful play into Grass, Ice, Steel, Bug, and Fairy opponents, though Water, Ground, and Rock remain dangerous matchups.
Weather Ball (Fire) keeps Ninetales on the offensive with a fast, reliable STAB attack, but Energy Ball is what gives the set its counterplay. The Grass-type move can punish all three of Ninetales’ weaknesses for super-effective damage, making Water, Ground, and Rock opponents think twice before assuming they have a safe matchup.
Jellicent
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Hex
- Charged Moves: Surf and Shadow Ball
- Type: Water/Ghost
- Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Water, Steel, Poison, Ice, Fire, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Dark, Electric, Ghost, and Grass
Jellicent is at its best when it can dictate the pace of a Great League: Mega Edition battle. Its Water/Ghost typing offers eight resistances and solid defensive utility, while Hex quickly builds energy without forcing it to depend on Fast Move damage.
Surf gives Jellicent an accessible Water-type STAB attack to keep opponents under pressure, especially Fire, Ground, and Rock-types. Shadow Ball is the bigger threat waiting behind it, packing enough Ghost-type power to punish Psychic and opposing Ghost Pokemon or simply deal heavy neutral damage when shields are gone.
Forretress
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Volt Switch
- Charged Moves: Sand Tomb and Rock Tomb
- Type: Bug/Steel
- Resistances: Poison, Grass, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Fire
Forretress is less about landing huge attacks and more about making every exchange increasingly uncomfortable. Its Bug/Steel typing gives it nine resistances and only one weakness to Fire, while Volt Switch supplies useful Electric damage against Water and Flying opponents.
Both Charged Moves lean heavily into disruption. Sand Tomb lowers the opponent’s Defense, helping Forretress steadily increase its damage pressure, whereas Rock Tomb cuts their Attack and can make prolonged battles even more favorable while threatening Fire, Flying, Bug, and Ice-types.
Quagsire (Shadow)
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Mud Shot
- Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Mud Bomb
- Type: Water/Ground
- Resistances: Electric, Poison, Rock, Steel, and Fire
- Weaknesses: Grass
Shadow Quagsire is a fast-moving threat in the Great League: Mega Edition, sacrificing some durability for the extra damage that comes with being a Shadow Pokemon. Its Water/Ground typing is another major plus, leaving Grass as its only weakness and giving it useful resistances to Electric, Steel, Fire, Rock, and Poison.
Mud Shot is all about getting Quagsire’s Charged Moves online quickly, and both options are cheap enough to capitalize on that energy gain. Aqua Tail provides rapid Water-type pressure, while Mud Bomb adds Ground STAB for Electric, Steel, Fire, Rock, and Poison opponents, allowing Shadow Quagsire to keep shields and HP under constant pressure.
Mega Sableye
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Foul Play and Power Gem
- Type: Dark/Ghost
- Resistances: Normal, Psychic, Poison, and Fighting
- Weaknesses: Fairy
Mega Sableye is exceptionally difficult to exploit, with its Dark/Ghost typing giving opponents just one weakness to target: Fairy. Shadow Claw keeps up steady Ghost-type pressure while generating the energy needed to make frequent use of its Charged Moves.
Foul Play is the go-to STAB attack, giving Mega Sableye reliable Dark damage against Ghost and Psychic opponents. Power Gem adds a useful curveball to the moveset, providing Rock coverage for Flying, Fire, Bug, and Ice-types that might otherwise be comfortable taking its usual attacks.
Mimikyu
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Shadow Claw
- Charged Moves: Shadow Sneak and Play Rough
- Type: Ghost/Fairy
- Resistances: Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Normal
- Weaknesses: Ghost and Steel
Mimikyu brings a useful mix of Ghost pressure and Fairy coverage, with its typing giving it particularly strong defensive matchups against Fighting, Normal, Bug, and Dragon attacks. Shadow Claw does the groundwork, combining steady damage with enough energy generation to keep its Charged Moves in play.
Shadow Sneak lets Mimikyu stay on the front foot with a quicker Ghost-type STAB option, particularly against Psychic and opposing Ghost Pokemon. Play Rough requires more patience, but rewards it with much heavier Fairy damage that can put Dragon, Dark, and Fighting-types in serious trouble.
Empoleon
THE POKEMON COMPANY- Fast Move: Metal Sound
- Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Drill Peck
- Type: Water/Steel
- Resistances: Steel, Poison, Ice, Water, Rock, Psychic, Normal, Flying, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
- Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, and Ground
Empoleon has plenty of opportunities to find favorable ground, largely thanks to its excellent Water/Steel typing and 11 resistances. Metal Sound prioritizes energy generation, helping Empoleon get to the attacks that make it much more dangerous.
Hydro Cannon delivers powerful Water-type STAB at a low energy cost, making it Empoleon’s main tool for wearing down opponents and drawing shields. Drill Peck complements it with Flying coverage, most importantly giving Empoleon a way to hit Fighting and Grass Pokemon that can complicate its matchups.
Altaria
Niantic / The Pokemon Company- Fast Move: Dragon Breath
- Charged Moves: Sky Attack and Flamethrower
- Type: Dragon/Flying
- Resistances: Fighting, Water, Bug, Fire, Grass, and Ground
- Weaknesses: Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Rock
Altaria can quickly wear teams down in the Great League: Mega Edition, with Dragon Breath delivering constant STAB damage from the moment it enters battle. Its six resistances also give it several opportunities to take control of a matchup, although its double weakness to Ice means those opponents need to be avoided whenever possible.
Its Charged Moves help cover very different situations. Sky Attack provides reliable Flying damage against Fighting, Grass, and Bug-types, while Flamethrower gives Altaria a valuable response to Steel and Ice Pokemon that can withstand or punish its usual Dragon pressure.
Tinkaton
DEXERTO- Fast Move: Fairy Wind
- Charged Moves: Gigaton Hammer and Bulldoze
- Type: Fairy/Steel
- Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Rock, Psychic, Poison, Normal, Ice, Grass, Flying, Fairy, and Dark
- Weaknesses: Fire and Ground
Tinkaton’s Fairy/Steel typing does a lot of the heavy lifting, giving it a massive 11 resistances while leaving only Fire and Ground as weaknesses. Fairy Wind focuses on rapidly generating energy rather than dealing heavy Fast Move damage, setting Tinkaton up to threaten with its much stronger attacks.
Gigaton Hammer is the centerpiece of the set, delivering powerful Steel-type STAB that can punish Fairy, Ice, and Rock opponents. Bulldoze gives Tinkaton an entirely different coverage option, allowing it to hit Fire, Steel, Electric, Poison, and Rock Pokemon for super-effective Ground damage.
Lickilicky
NIANTIC- Fast Move: Rollout
- Charged Moves: Body Slam and Shadow Ball
- Type: Normal
- Resistances: Ghost
- Weaknesses: Fighting
Lickilicky can be a stubborn Pokemon to remove from the Great League: Mega Edition, pairing solid bulk with an energy-focused moveset. Rollout gets its Charged Moves ready quickly, and its pure Normal typing means opponents generally need Fighting damage to exploit it directly.
Once the energy starts flowing, Body Slam lets Lickilicky repeatedly chip away at health or shields with reliable STAB damage. Shadow Ball changes the equation against Ghost Pokemon, which otherwise wall Normal-type attacks, while also providing a much stronger hit when Lickilicky needs extra closing power.
