Downing Street has insisted that RAF Fairford is “safe” despite the US withdrawing a bomber fleet from the British airbase following a suspected terror plot.

It follows the arrest of six people on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences in the past weeks, after three “suspicious vehicles” were sighted near the Gloucestershire facility.

The latest arrest occurred on Friday, with a dual UK-Iranian national arrested in connection with the event.

All six male suspects have been released on bail, according to Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP).

In the wake of the alleged plot, fears were raised about the safety of US warplanes stationed at the base.

RAF Fairford had hosted what was thought to be about a dozen B-1 strategic bombers, which had been used in the war with Iran.

Following the redeployment, Downing Street has insisted the Gloucestershire base is “safe”.

“We have no comment on foreign nations' military operations,” they said.
